I connected the unit to the battery, the unit turned on for 1 second and then turned black. After the first try nothing happens when I try to turn it on. The unit was connected red wire to plus and black wire to ground.

Re: Garmin 525s will not turn on
This is a common problem with 400 and 500 series garmins. The only fix is to take it back and exchange it. There has been a software update to prevent it from happening but once it powers down it's too late for the update. This has been a known problem since they hit the market in May. Any respectable retailer should exchange it with no questions asked, especially if you just bought it.

Take a look at rear USB port. Insert the plug. Gently wiggle the plug. Does the USB port appear loose? A common problem with this model is that there is little mechanical support for the USB connector. If it breaks off of the printed circuit board, there battery will nit be able to be charged and the unit will appear dead. Have you tried holding down the power switch for at least 10 seconds?
I have a Garmin 255 myself. And what I have found is, MOST of the time, the problem is that the CHARGER CABLE has an intermittent connection in it! So, when the cable moves, flexes, or stretches, the battery charge STOPS, and the (mostly discharged) battery cannot support the load, so the unit blacks out and turns off. Try S-L-O-W-L-Y moving the cable while connected with the unit on, and watch for evidence of a bad cable! Sometimes a DIRTY (trapezoid- shaped) connector will do the same thing!
Garmin 755T BLACKOUT 2009!!!!

I jump into my car and input directions to her friends house. All of a sudden my GPS 755T is telling me that it is trying to update the firmware. I press ok. it displayed 1% said done and it couldn't find the Satellites. I was like WTH and turned it off and back on. It stated Cannot find Satellites. I was like ok, let me keep it on the charger 12V Cigarrette lighter. I thought it would start working while we drive and my wife was trying to turn it on but the screen went black and now I'm pissed because I just brought this thing. I went to Garmin's web page but there was nothing informative. I guessing something happened when this Firmware was trying to download into my unit. It must have killed something. It is now 10:27pm June 24th and I'm just surfing the net looking for similar experiences. now I know I'm not the only one. GARMIN WHAT HAPPENED????
Accordingto Garmin, this problem can be fixed by disabling the WAAS feature in teh set up menu. There is an incompatibility between the old Garmin software and latest WAAS upgrades. Later software from Garmin is supposed to fix this problem.
