Question about Garmin StreetPilot 7200 GPS Receiver

Garmin Streetpliot 7200 Gremlins

After owning this unit for 18 month, now out of warranty, I have this recurring problem where it is as if someone is remotely pushing the menu button on my touch screen. You can hear the tick, tick, tick and the screen will end up on “Save As Favorite” screen, at which point the touch screen will not respond when any button such as BACK or Menu is pressed. I have to power down the unit several times, or unplug the power to reboot the unit. This works sometimes and will bring me to the Touch Screen Calibration screen, which may fail to calibrate until the third attempted. I have updated to the newest map 2008 software but the problem still pops up. Anybody else have this problem, Garmin wants $350 to repair their SteetPilot 7200 ouch!

Same issue. Unit is about 2 years old and the touch screen seems to be failing. It will have a mind of its own and start going to different screens like it thinks the touch screen has been pressed. Will also want to calibrate the screen over and over. Very frustrating and for the amount of money iI spent on this ($939.00) there is no way i would pay them $350 to fix. This will be the last Garmin product I buy or recommend. It is obvioulsy a problem with the unit since others are having the same issue.

As a last resort, you can try a master reset. With the unit off hold your finger on the power key for approximately 15 seconds until you see a message "This operation will erase all waypoints, do you want to continue?"

Tap yes and the unit should reboot then attempt to acquire satellites. You will lose any favorites you have saved but it may save you a trip to the factory.

If the problem persists I would say you have a problem with the internal circuits and repair is the only option.

L bought this product from Costco about 9 months ago with external warranty for 18 months. Unfortunately the monitor has falling off the wall and damage the glass. what should l do now?

Your warranty does not cover the damage. If you want to have someone attempt a repair it will be at your expense. Otherwise you will need to purchase a new monitor unit if it is possible to buy one on ts own without having to buy a whole new package..

Ebay Buyers Beware When Purchasing Garmin GPS Products

For those of you considering purchasing a new/refurbished Garmin GPS product through eBay;

Here is some info taken directly from Garmin's website (FAQ section - search under ebay) See my comments at the end.

Question #1. Does the unit I purchased on EBAY have a warranty?

Products that are purchased from online auctions such as EBAY are not covered by warranty. Online auction confirmations are not accepted for warranty verification and Garmin will not replace any missing components from any package purchased through an online auction.

Question #2. Does Garmin have any authorized dealers on eBay or any other online auction site?

Garmin does not have any authorized dealers that sell new products directly on online auction sites. Any purchases made through online auction sites are on a "buyer beware" basis. A copy of the original sales receipt is required as the proof of purchase for warranty repairs. Online auction confirmations are not accepted for warranty verification and Garmin will not replace any missing components from any package purchased through an online auction.

There is always the possibility that products purchased through eBay or other online auction sites could be stolen merchandise. You assume this risk when you buy through these auction sites. If you buy a Garmin product through an online auction site and later send it to Garmin for service, if the product is determined by Garmin to be stolen merchandise upon receipt at Garmin's facility (through a serial number match), Garmin reserves the right to return the product to its rightful owner or send it to the investigating law enforcement authorities.

Question #3. I purchased a unit through an online auction and Garmin has just informed me that the unit is stolen. What can I do?

If a unit is purchased through an online auction, such as eBay, and that unit is found in our stolen-units database, Garmin is not obligated to release any registration or unlock code information. Also, please be aware that Garmin can request that the stolen unit be returned to Garmin without compensation and report this information to law enforcement authorities.

If the product has already been returned to Garmin for service and is determined by Garmin to be stolen merchandise upon receipt at Garmin's facility (through a serial number match), Garmin reserves the right to return the product to its rightful owner or send it to the investigating law enforcement authorities.

** My Comments **

I purchased my Nuvi 350 on eBay through a so-called Garmin "Authorized Dealer". Three days later when my unit broke, I found out that Garmin would not honor the warranty and they told me that my refurbished unit was already registered to someone else. Garmin also told me that they had never heard of the "eBay dealer" that I had purchased the unit from (ebestdeals4u). This is how I got into fixing the Nuvi's on my own.

Now, I'm not saying that the sellers on eBay are going to rip you off. In my case, my Nuvi worked fine except that the power switch broke 3 days later.

As for stolen units: I'd be cautious of anyone selling a unit with just the GPS and no accessories or just the GPS and car adapter alone. Be more suspicious if they claim the unit is locked with a PIN and that they have forgotten it. If a seller has the original box and all of the accessories, it's less likely that it was stolen from a vehicle. However, ask them if the deal includes the yellow Garmin registration card. You'll need that to register your unit with Garmin and obtain future updates. It has specific information unique to each Nuvi. No two cards are alike.

However, just because you have the card, doesn't mean your unit hasn't already been registered to someone else. If thats the case, you're out of luck, unless the seller can give your the ID & password that it was registered with through Garmin.

You can be assured that if you purchaseed your unit through a well-known retail chain, your Nuvi WILL have a warranty recognized by Garmin. No, I don't work for a major retail chain. I am an Engineer in the Electronics field (not Garmin or any other GPS manufacturer).

If you have any additional questions, please feel free to email me at ks3r at sharc dot net.

Good luck & safe travels,

Have a six month old StreetPilot 7200 and the 12 volt cable stopped working. Unit apparently gets no power. Works fine with 120 V AC cable. Garmin says they have no parts for this unit. Is there a simple...

First, make sure that the unit really does run off of +12V. Most Garmin units really run off of +5VDC and there is a charger/regulator that reduces the +12VDC to +5VDC. Look at the power cable and see what the output voltage is. Does the unit has a USB port?

All of a sudden, my Garmin SP 7200 lost all satellite reception. All the signal bars are blank. Garmin says $190 to repair. Really like this unit but considering another unit. Is the GPS receiver...

Try running and installing or reinstalling the latest update using the Garmin WebUpdater.
download the latest version of WebUpdater software
Usually this will resolve most issues.
Failing that, the GPS receiver is replaceable as per Garmin's $190 to repair.

Map updates are free for units which are recently sold with the older maps and the new maps have been published, ie you just bought a unit in 2009 which still had 2008 maps on it after the 2009 maps had been released. Rather than recall all the units from the store shelves, they offer free updates on the mapping software. Continually updating the maps on 18 month old units is not free, there is an update charge. What is free from Garmin is the unit's software. Hope this clarifies your assumption.

I've owned a Garmin 305 forerunner for ~ 8 months now, and it's suddenly stopped working. The "on"/ off button does not function & the device won't download to PC either, is this fixable?

Your unit is still under warranty. With that type of problem i would suggest you give garmin a call first to claim warranty.

Toshiba equium m70-339 -

If you replaced the keyboard, then you also got a new ribbon cable. The keyboard and ribbon cable come attached to each other. From the information that you have given me, the only thing I can think of is replacing the motherboard. As with all computer components, the problem can possibly recur. As long as your computer is still worth over $500 I would say it is worth replacing.

No connection through USB

I have the same problem with my unit. It is 18 months old. The rubber cover seems unable to fully protect the connection. I sent off the unit to "Garmin Europe" located in (UK)Hampshire SO51 9DL". I was expecting some horrible repair bill. They have charged me under £40 for the repair/replacement and given me another years warranty. They have promised a fast turnaround. I think the cost is worth it to retrieve my data and cary on using htis excellent peice of gear.
