The hub needs to be removed from the axle in most cases for the axle to be removed from the vehicle. If you are replacing the axle anyway, you could cut off the end of the spindle with a cut-off disc on a grinder. That way the hub can come off and you can remove the axle. Hope this helps.
Usually once the boot is torn, dirt goes in, and all of the lubricant goes out. If you have been driving it this way, it will damage things faster. Normally you hear a "click" when turning out of a bad cv joint.It is a safer solution to just replace both, but of coarse, not cheaper.
You could weld the keyway and file it back to size or replace axle. To upgrade, check with some of the big axle manufacturers like strange engineering etc. They could likely help or point you in the right direction. Anything you do will be $$ though.
