wondering why you want to install vista in a computer that will totally support windows 7 ultimate. at any rate sounds like you may have a bad install disk. i researched this model and its good build. windows 7 would be better but if your set on vista, call Microsoft and request a replacement disc. as long as you have the original cd and key they will replace it. the disc has the disc id on it.

Windows Installation Disc VS Windows Upgrade Disc -NOT THE SAME-

Having Trouble Booting To Your Windows Upgrade Disc?

...Upgrade discs aren't bootable discs. To repair a windows installation, you must use either a system repair disc or, better yet, a windows installation disc (genuine Retail/OEM discs are pretty much your only option to completely reinstall your windows operating system, unless you own a previous full installation disc of a previously released Windows version (such as XP or Vista), in which case you could install that windows operating system and then upgrade to a newer windows OS like windows 7. however if you ever need to reinstall windows 7, you would either need to reinstall the older windows OS, then upgrade to the newer one.

If that isn't clear, I'll sum it up....

Let's say you bought a computer, that computer had windows xp home edition. Maybe you wanted to upgrade from Windows XP/Windows Vista or Windows 7?
Well in order to switch from Windows XP/Vista to Windows 7, (or even from Windows 7 home premium- to windows7 Pro or Ultimate), then you must either:
A) Buy an upgrade disc and upgrade to the newer desired version.
B) Or, Buy a Retail Copy of the version you want to install. (keep in mind that a retail Windows 7 disc can be used to perform an upgrade rather than to competely wipe the hard disc and perform a clean install (delete partitions, reformat, and perform a new windows installation), if you so choose.

The bottom line is, you cannot Install a fresh clean copy of windows using an upgrade disc. OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) and Retail Windows Operation System Installation Setup Discs are "Bootable Discs". Windows Upgrade Discs are NOT bootable. (unless one where to "modify that particular disc, which is not legal).

A solution to that is to install Windows Vista Ultimate on top of your old vista installation. Just insert your Vista DVD and restart your computer. And simply follow the instructions for the installation.

If you place your Win7 disk in the DVD drive boot the laptop from the disk and choose to install a new system.
Follow the menu and prompts.
When it has installed download the drivers from Acer.com otherwise you will get problems.
Hope that helps.

Can I load drivers downloaded to a disc, and install on other pc

Yes, go to Acer site, locate your model for drivers. Download them into a folder on your other machine (the one with internet access). Then insert a USB stick and copy and paste the folder to the stick. Now just insert the stick in the Vista machine, drag the folder to your desktop and begin installing your drivers.

Here is a link to your drivers. Click on desktop / Aspire / M1640 then make sure to set the operating system to Vista Ultimate.

Hope this helps.

Reinstalled windows xp profesional after hd crash. Did not have the original acer aspie 5100 recovery disc to install. Now the cd dvd rom is not recognised by laptop

if you originally had Vista on then the bios is updated from the older XP bios and wont see the drive, check here for bios downloads, or put Vista back on.

If you have a full XP disc you will need to do a full format and installation, do not use somebody elses restore disc as it's not the complete windows that you will need.
