If you have a new tomtom then the cameras will be valid for 12 months then as you say require a annual subscription. The unit will tell you they are out of date if you have not connected to tomtom via your computer for a month. Recommend you update once a month so it can download the available updates such as safety cameras, gps quickfix and map share correction and any navcore improvements they have released.

Is there free maps that you can download from the internet, or do you have to pay R350 every year to update you garmin.

There are no free maps. You can buy "lifetime map updates" which costs around 85 Euros. When you go to buy the update from the garmin website it gives you the option of a once off update or a lifetime update. If you buy the lifetime update you get to update your satnav 4 times each year for the lifetime of your satnav. Lifetime in this instance means the lifetime of your satnav not your lifetime.

How can I get a free update for my Garmin Nuvi 255? I tried the Garmin website but I had to pay for an update.

The only time you get a free update is if a new map comes out within 60 days of your satnav first accessing satellites. If you're paying for updates you can pay for a once off or for a lifetime update. With the lifetime update you pay once, 85 euros for the map of Europe, and you get maps every 3 months or so.

How do you download latest maps for free as i have been told it is possible ? Thanks...

It's only free to download the latest maps if a new map comes out within 60 days of your satnav first accessing satellites or if you have a satnav that comes with lifetime maps. However you can buy lifetime maps. The lifetime map of Europe costs €85 and you get updates every 4 months or so for the lifetime of the satnav.

I just bought a new garmin 1300 gps love it does this model have free up date or when will it need to be up graded later.

If it's the 1300 it does not have free updates. The only time you get a free update is if a new map comes out within 60 days of your satnav first accessing satellites. If it's the 1300LMT then it does have free lifetime updates. The LMT stands for lifetime maps and traffic. Of course you're paying for the updates in the price of the satnav. (Lifetime means the life of your satnav not your life)

If yours doesn't have the LMT you can buy lifetime map updatess on the garmin website. Updates come out around 4 times each year but it's up to yourself how often you want to update. The satnav usually displays a message advising you to update when the map is a year old but it will continue to work if you don't update.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 265WT about a year old. Do I need up[dates and are these free, please?

If it's working alright and you're happy with the map there's no need to update it. New maps are released approximately every 3 months for Garmin satnavs but unless there are a lot of new roads there's no need to update that often. Details on how to update your satnav, if you want to, are at http://www.fixya.com/support/r5628920-update_garmin_satnav_maps

Garmin only supply free updates if a new map became available within 60 days of the first time your satnav accessed satellites. If you never checked to see if you were entitled to a free update follow the update procedure outlined at the above link. When you click on Get Update, if you are entitled to it free you'll be brought to the download page. If you're not entitled to it free you'll be brought to the page where you pay for it.

My Sat nav is 2 years old and does not have the new irish roads. How do I update and how much does it cost

You can get information on how to update your garmin satnav at http://www.fixya.com/support/r5628920-update_garmin_satnav_maps

You have 2 options when updating, to get a one off update or a lifetime update. (i.e. the lifetime of your satnav rather than your life)
The one off update will cost approx £50.00 or the lifetime update will cost approximately £75.00
If you can afford it the lifetime update is well worth paying the extra for as there are 4 updates every year and it keeps you up to date. Also sometimes when maps get too out of date it causes problems for the satnav and it stops working so it's cheaper in the long run to have the lifetime update.

Why if you buy a garmin at game you have to pay R500 at trapers to up date it for you is there no way that i can update it on the internet i feel if you buy it that the soft ware much be corect and not...

If you bought the satnav new then you should be entitled to a free update from www.garmin.com. Garmin claim that if a new map comes out within 60 days of the first time your satnav acquires a satellite connection you can update it free from their website. Details on how to register and update your satnav can be found at http://www.fixya.com/support/r5628920-update_garmin_satnav_maps

Note: When you register the satnav log in to myGarmin and click on myMaps. The map on your satnav should be shown. If there's an update available it will be shown beside the map name. When you click on GET UPDATE it will let you know if it's free or has to be paid for.

I recently purchased a Garmin nuvi(r) 1310(T) from Halfords in Manchester and was advised to get a "free" update after registering my unit, as it could be 1-2 years old. On checking there were no "free"...

If a new map becomes available within 60 days of the satnav first receiving a satellite signal you get it free. If you only got the satnav there may not be an update at the moment. While the satnav may have been a while in the shop Halfords keep the maps up to date. Even if there was not a free update available myMaps in myGarmin should show if there's an update which could be paid for available. If it says no update available you probably have the latest version. A new map normally comes out in November though the dates vary. Keep a check by logging into myGarmin and checking on myMaps. When the new map becomes available it should show up there. It will let you know if it's free or not.

If you want to check what year the map on your satnav is:
Press TOOLS (the spanner symbol)
Press SETTINGS (or LOCALE if your satnav doesn't have a settings icon)
Press MAPS
Press MAP INFO at the bottom of the map page

This will show what map you have and the year of the map. If your map is the latest version it would explain why there's no updates
