I have had this camera for about 2yrs and zero problems until now. I have to depress the shutter release button several times to get it to snap a picture.
Did you change (unnoticed perhaps) anything to the settings?
Be aware your camera needs a little time to focus. And when conditions are bad, like little contrast in the subject or bad light conditions, the camera needs more time to focus.
Please try to shoot in automatic mode. Then when you have a subject press the shutter release button half way. Look if you framed correct and then press fully. This way every time the camera should click.

I think you should replace your camera battary with suaitable one.

Take the lens off and continue pressing the shutter untill it doesn't react anymore, you should then have a normal menu without the error message.Put your lens on and you're all sorted.Cheaper and less hassle than sending it to Nikon.

Pls make sure of the following:
- You are using original Nikon batteries (generic batteries gave a similar problem to me)
- The aperture ring of your camera is correctly placed

I have the same problem and narrowed it down to my 18-55 lens. It wrks with y 200 mm lens but not the 55mm......so i am getting a new lens.

The shooter-release button do not operates in auto mode unless the flash is charged or the decision to use it or not is made by the sensor for light ...probably something is damaged..and this is made with difficulty ..I would try with the flash always on ..and see if the shooting is prompt or not ..and if makes the same ...you should take in mind the possibility of changing the flash ...Try several modes and see if any of them makes it usable ..cause changing the flash will not guarantee functionality ..and nor will be a easy to do job or a cheap one ..

This doesn't solve the problem. I depress the shutter release button halfway to focus the camer and I can hear the flash charging but when I press it all the way down after focusing, nothing happens. Sometimes if I press it several times in rapid succession after focusing, it will snap the picture.
Now try this. Switch off the flash. And try again. It could be the flash can't reach the power needed to fire. (Bad capacitor or something else) if the camera works directed that way, you know where to look for, or what is wrong.
That didn't help either. I'm afraid I'm going to have to take it to a repair shop.
