When using different lenses, a few things should be kept in mind.For some you need an adapter and not every lens ail work as the lenses made for this camera. Sometimes focus or other things needs to be set manually. So even when you can connect a lens to the camera you don't have any guaranty it will work fully automatic and correct. Please read the manual tag came with your camera, about the differences between the four thirds cameras and lenses.

Looks like theres something stuck in the lens mechanism, some grit or dust or something.

In all probabilities, the lens barrel must have tilted, preventing the lens from retracting into the barrel. It could also be possible that some dust particles got stuck in between the segments of the lens barrel. Check for these. Try to straighten the barrel without using much force, and try to remove any dust particle that got stuck between the segments.

The TZ3 has a design problem with their new automatic lens cover, ie, manual lense cap on TZ1 was illiminated on TZ3.

Make sure your lense cover is completely retracted in front of the lense. If not, nudge it fully opened and see if this solves you problem. If it does, contact Panasonic with your problem. If not under warranty, tell them you want them to fix 'their' problem on your camers. Google it on the net and see how common this problem is.

I believe the FZ7 determines that the lense cap is still on when it can't extend the zoom lense because the lense cap is in the way. I would check to see if your zoom lense housing is somehow stuck (could be sand or dirt in it) which is creating enough resistance to make the camera think the lense cap is impeding the zoom lense from extending.
