I have a very old Lanier Model AL/C II cassette recorder......It makes a humming sound, but nothing works....i.e. pressing ''FF'', ''Rec'', etc. gets no movement of the cassette. Can it be fixed and if so appx. cost to do same....

Hello Anonymous, you can have dirty heads and guides, also the internal key Rec-Play could be wrong
You should do a full maintenance of the cassette system
Consult a specialized technical service

mention the make and model when you ask, I don't think you used an old or tab closed cassette, some old models shows record switch problem, push the record button with little pressure, if it gives action spray some cleaning agent through the grove of the rec button, often press it.

You can't burn a CD-A with the ZV427MG9. The unit will not burn to a CD to play in a CD player.

You may be able to record the audio to a DVD with no video source. Connect your cassette player to the Line In audio ports (L/R) at either the back or front of the unit. Depending on your cassette player, you may need a 3.5 mm M to RCA F/F adapter to connect the RCA audio cable to the cassette player's headphone jack. Do not connect a cable to the video input of the composite input unless you have a video on a camera or something to play back. This means that the recorded video may say "No Signal" or will be black or static. (Note: this may not work with this signal issue.)

Set the unit to record to DVD on L1 or L2, as needed, by pressing Source on your remote. Advance the cassette to where you want to record. Press Rec on the DVD unit and then press Play on your cassette player. If you want to identify tracks, Stop the recording and play back and then press Rec and Play again. You are at risk of having issues with the volume during the recording. Clipping of overly-loud sounds and distortion is possible.

When done, finalize the disc, if desired, to play the disc on other DVD players.

If you want to make an audio CD, you would be better off using a computer and connecting the cassette player to the Line In jack of the computer. You do have to make some adjustments to avoid recording the default Microphone input. Use a program like Audacity or any other audio editing program. Record the signal and divide it into tracks, if needed. Now you can filter out any distortion as well. Then save as a WAV file. Use a different program to burn the WAV files to a CD-A. (This must be burned as a mastered disc; my attempts that worked on an older CD player failed if there were gaps between the tracks. Lots of programs will do this; Roxio Creator is one option.)

I have not seen those to a large extent due to their value not being worth a repair. I did work on them at Teac though. The capstan motor of the right side deck sound like it is burned out. I have some motors here so it is just a matter of if you want me to work on it or not. I get a lot of units in all the time- I am Skywave Tape Deck Repair in Chicago area.

If you press Play, Rew or FF and can hear something in the machine (even though the tape doesn't turn), then it's more than likely a broken capstan belt.

There are five screws one on each corner and one in the middle of the bottom case

The only people I know that can still fix old Lanier machines are [email protected].
They are trained on Lanier and worked there for many years.

Most likley it is a bad motor or a broken belt. There is a seperate motor or FF and Rewind.. If the motor is bad it is likly that the motor control circuit board is bad also (motor shorts and takes out the board also). If there is no "click" when play is selected it could be the play solenoid is dirty and not engaging. I have repaired thousand of these units through the years and in spite of these issues they were a great sounding unit.

BTW this is true for the VW-210, VW-260, p-139 and simular units.

Better tape decks, like Pioneer, may use a different mechanism for record/play than FF & REW. So it sounds like a belt or mechanical link for the REC/PLAY has failed.
