I have a Sony XBR5 HDTV LCD and I cannot get subtitles below my screen. In particular, MSNBC bussiness channel has stock quotes at bottom of screen that I cannot see. Tried changing aspect ratio but does not solve the problem. Looks like it has something to do with screen ratio and pixels. It goes from one channel of 16:9 1080p to 3:4 420p.

Is it a cable box problem or can I solve this on my own?

Akai LCT37Z4AD with new Comcast HD adapter does not have picture filling entire screen. There are 5 inches of blank space on each side of screen and subtitles are cut off.

Check to see, what format the television set that widescreen etc. this may be all that's wrong with your set. If the problem persists the vertical height needs to be adjusted.  Most likely through the service menu, if units under warranty you can call Akai.  For further structures.

I have a 32 inch Upstar LED TV. How do I turn off closed captioning?

On the remote there is a button for Subtitles. Press that button and the Subtitles will disappear. If it is not on the remote then you have to find it in the TV's settings. 'Closed captions' are old words. We now call these 'Subtitles' and all TV's with remotes have a 'Subtitle' button. Look for it, then press while pointing the remote to the TV.

Subtitles format

If you are saying no closed captions---those should be available in the menu and most cable or sat boxes have the same feature---if turned on in the box those in the set may be grayed out or not available--check both to see if set to CC1 for example.

You have to go to Video subtitles settings and turn it off. In some TV's its called closed caption off.
You may even have a one touch option on your remote labeled subtitle or a logo of a TV screen with three dots at the bottom ( indicating writing on the screen )

Do you mean the closed captioning or is it the subtitles when viewing a DVD. If it is the DVD then the subtitles need to be turned off on the DVD player. If it is the closed caption and you have a HD Comcast or other type of cable box, then the CC needs to be turned off on that device.
