Collapsed or broken lifter, but can't get ANY of the lifters out of their bore

There is a special tool called a lifter puller. It has 2 tangs on the bottom of the tool and when the handle is squeezed it grasps the lifter. Very helpful when lifter bores are gummed up to remove stubborn lifters.May be able to get from Napa

2003 hyundai accent 1.5L. tapping like valves need adjusted but engine has hydraulic lifters. Do the lifters need replacement?

Probably a combination of parts. Lifters and or rocker arms. Could be dirty lifters also. If your ready to change oil, what I do is get the engine to operating temperature. Pour a half quart of transmission fluid in and let it run 15 to 20 minutes. It's high detergent and helps clean out the lifters. If the lifters are tapping from dirt, this will stop the tapping or at least quiet it down some.

What exactly are lifters?

lifters ride on loped surface of the cam shaft the other end of the lifter a push rod sits on , when the cam shaft rotates the lifter moves up and down allowing the push rod to move the rocker arm which opens and closes the valves.

Valve tapping ccan I fix it myself before I take it to mechanic

Inspect/Test/Service/Replace Hydraulic lifters can fail for several reasons:
  • Dirt lodged in the check valve can allow the lifter to leak. Too much wear between the lifter and the body can cause excessive leak-down. This results in a noisy lifter.
  • A lifter might be noisy because of an oil pressure problem.
NOTE An oil pressure problem will be evident on hollow pushrod engines if no oil is reaching the rocker arms.
  • A lifter can become stuck because of varnish that accumulates between its plunger and body due to a lack of periodic oil changes.
  • A stuck lifter can sometimes be freed up by the addition of an additive to the oil, or by spraying fuel system spray cleaner down a hollow pushrod oil channel.
  • Lifters that stick because of varnish buildup can sometimes be loosened up by squirting carburetor spray cleaner down the hollow pushrod lubricating channel, where it contacts the rocker arm.
Hydraulic lifters are not rebuilt because they are relatively inexpensive. It is possible to disassemble and clean lifters but they must be reassembled with their mated parts. Because of the labor time involved, this procedure is usually impractical.
Sometimes a piece of foreign material becomes lodged in the lifter check valve. If the lifter is removed and disassembled before serious wear between the lifter and cam lobe results, it may be cleaned.
Worn mechanical (solid) lifters can be reground.
  • The base of the lifter is ground to a radius on a special lifter grinder.
  • Roller lifters have a longer service life than standard lifters.
  • Wear can occur on the roller pin. Some of these pins are serviceable.
It might occasionally be necessary to disassemble a hydraulic lifter to clean it or to inspect it.
  • If this is necessary, disassemble one lifter at a time and pay attention to the order of the check valve assembly.
  • Lifter disassembly is done by pressing down on the pushrod seat with your thumb and using a screwdriver to remove the snap ring.
  • Remove the plunger from the body; this may require tapping the body.
  • Next, remove the check valve assembly.
  • After thoroughly cleaning the lifter components in solvent, visually inspect them for signs of wear.
  • If the internal components pass inspection, the lifter can be reassembled.
  • During reassembly, cleanliness of the parts is of utmost importance.

The plastic paddles in the drum on the laterwashing machines often come loose and come off altogether. They can bereplaced. call them lifters. You usuallyinsert a small screwdriver down one of the holes (it's the 3rd one on ) andgently press down while sliding the lifter out.
Washing trainers in a washing machine is reputedto damage the drum lifters and paddles inside the drum, particularly onnon-quality washing machines.

98 TAHOE VORTEC 350 JUST REBUILT REPLACED EVERYTHING BUT CAM AND LIFTERS NOW IT HAS A LOUD LIFTER TAP AFTER IT WARMS UP.I WAS TOLD BY THE MACHINE SHOP THAT THESE ROLLER CAMS AND LIFTERS DONT WEAR OUT .I...

As far as I know all hydraulic lifters can go bad, collapes or stick. And yours are definately hydraulic lifters, rollered yes, which will make them more durable, but they can go bad. The machine shop should have down a leak-down test on the lifters. That is the only way to determine if the lifters are good. I would check that you have proper oil pressure, I'm sure you do. I bought a "rebuilt head" for a Saturn DOHC engine, and the machine shop never did a leak down test on the lifters, and I had the samething happening.

How do you tell good lifter from bad lifters in 97 Chevy Vortec 350

Most of the vortecs that i have worked on have hydraulic roller lifters, but i cant say for certain that your engine does, however i am sure that it has hydraulic lifters and they can be checked by trying to push them down in the center where the pushrods contact, if they compress easily the lifter is bad, If they are roller lifters, check for any wear on the roller and how well they turn, it is ok to have some side to side movement on the pin but any up/down movement on the roller is bad. If the are non-roller lifters check for wear, if the lifter looks "dished" or "concaved" rather than having flat surface replace the lifter.

I cant get a rocker arm to tighten down on my 96 taurusit torqs down but stays loose .the push rod is in place but it is not firm

You may have a collapsed lifter or it may just be normal if the engine has not been started up yet. If you are installing old lifters (or did not remove lifters for whatever repair you were performing) there may be debris/varnish on the lifter preventing it from returning under spring pressure. (In which case you should probably replace it.) Some new lifters are very soft before the engine is started and the lifter has had a chance to "Pump Up".
