I have a similar problem but worse--I started an app and the screen went black. It would stay black for a minute, flicker on for 10 seconds, then go black again. Is it the backlight?

I had a similar problem with the same model; the cable connection into my computer was not good. Try fiddling or replacing the cable.

Common problem with just about 905 of failed LCD monitors; bad caps.
If you are going to DIY and have proper tools and know safety precaution then please read on:
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply (they should be replaced in a set), blown fuses; poor solder joints, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). White screen on a Samsung 206BW after it fell onto the floor

Something is wrong inside the monitor. I would call samsung support and get an answer from them. You could probably trade your monitor in aswell if its still under warranty.

Had exactly the same problem. Replacing two capacitors solved it!

Following advice from here and other places, today I replaced two capacitors that seemed to have burst at the top, and the problem disappeared completely!

It's the two 1000uF/25V capacitors (C261 & C263) on the power supply board (the large ones in the front - note their bloated tops).

People complained that the capacitors Samsung used were cheap ones that won't last, and indeed they cracked, just over 3 years after I bought that otherwise good monitor (3 years also being the warranty period - strange, no?...).

So for about $2 you can save yourself a lot of pain.
