Simple......the new disposal has an inlet pipe that the dishwasher drain hose attaches to. But remember...YOU MUST KNOCK OUT THE PLUG in the inlet pipe or the dishwasher water just backs up into the dishwasher.

Dishwasher not draining completely after new garbage disposal installed

If you hooked up the drain to the disposal directly there is no vent in the line. Use the air vent on the sink to connect the dishwasher drain hose. If there is no air vent, then you'll have to install one in the sink.

Belt, Water Pump Although few dishwashers have a water pump belt, if the dishwasher won't drain there might be a worn or broken water pump belt. After removing the lower kick panel the motor can be seen in the front, the water pump belt is on the bottom of the motor.

Drain Pump If the dishwasher won't drain, the drain pump might be defective. Test the pump motor with an Ohm meter. Drain pumps are not repairable, if it's defective it will need to be replaced.

Drain Impeller The drain impeller is attached to the pump and pushes the water out of the dishwasher, through the drain tube and into the garbage disposer or drain line. If the dishwasher won't drain, the drain impeller might be broken or worn out. Replace both the impeller and seal at the same time.

Drain Solenoid Kit If the dishwasher won't drain, the drain solenoid kit might need to be replaced. The drain solenoid is an actuator that opens a flap to allow the water to drain.
Drain Valve The drain valve can get clogged with debris and should be cleaned out if the dishwasher won't drain. If it seems clear of debris but won't actuate, it will need to be replaced. The drain valve is not repairable Pump and Motor Assembly If the dishwasher won't drain, the pump and motor assembly might be defective. If the motor runs during the drain cycle, check for a blockage in the drain line. If the motor won't run during the drain cycle or if it just hums when it should be running, the pump and motor assembly might need to be replaced.

Clogged or Improperly Installed Garbage Disposer If the dishwasher won't drain and the garbage disposer was installed recently, the installer might have forgotten to knock out the drain plug from this disposer. All garbage disposers are sold with a solid plug in the drain tube for situations where a dishwasher isn't connected. However, if the dishwasher is connected, the plug will need to be removed. If the disposer wasn't replaced recently, remove the dishwasher drain hose from the disposer and clean out both the fitting on the disposer and the end of the drain hose. These are the most common places to find an obstruction if the dishwasher won't drain.

Check Valve If the dishwasher won't drain the check valve might be stuck closed. The check valve is a small plastic device which prevents water from returning to the dishwasher after it has drained. If the valve gets stuck closed, it will prevent the water from draining. The check valve is the device that the drain hose is attached to on the dishwasher.

Check Ball If the dishwasher won't drain the check ball might be stuck. The check ball is a small plastic ball in the check valve which prevents water from returning to the dishwasher after it has drained. If the ball gets stuck, it will prevent the water from draining also. The check valve is the device that the drain hose is attached to on the dishwasher.

Water will not drain. I did have a new garbage disposer installed a couple of days ago, but don't know enough about dishwashers to even see where it connects to the disposer.

Hi Ruthp53, I am JK. I see that you have installed a new garbage disposal and now are having problems with your dishwasher (model FGHD2433KF) draining. I would recommend checking for blockage at garbage disposal and the drain. Also, new garbage disposables normally have a plug that will need to be taken out.
Hope this helps!

We bought a new dishwasher because the old one wasn't draining all the way. Same problem with the new one?

The pump is a motor which runs in one direction to spray water in the dishwasher to clean and the opposite direction to drain the water. The problem could be from a clog or kink in the drain hose. Several years ago the drain line would connect to the sink garbage disposal. If the garbage disposal is not draining or the dishwasher connection to the garbage disposal is restricted or clogged the dishwasher will not drain. Under the sink, look at the garbage disposal to see if a rubber hose is connected at the side of the disposal unit. If a hose is connected to the side of the disposal, remove the hose clamp and check for any restrictions from garbage in the inlet or hose. You can use a screwdriver to clean the fitting to the garbage disposal and a wire hanger to free any restrictions in the hose. If the dishwasher does not connect to the garbage disposal it should connect to the sink trap. This is more common with new dishwashers because they have built-in disposals. Disconnect the drain hose from the sink trap and the dishwasher and look for a clog at the sink connection. The dishwasher inlet should have an angled piece of plastic or metal facing downward to prevent the waste from the dishwasher from spraying up into the sink. Do not get to aggressive with the cleaning in order to prevent breaking the angled piece of plastic or metal. Look for any kinks in the hose and try to run water through the hose, but do not use the sink which you removed the drain line from or it could leak under the cabinet. If you see a bad kink replace the hose with a new one. I hope this works and you find the problem without a great deal of time or trouble.

Replaced disposal and now dishwasher isnt draining

It sounds like you've done everything fine. I would disconnect the dishwasher drain line from the disposal, have a bucket ready and see if it will drain. It's possible that there is a plug or something else left in the disposal opening that is blocking the water. If the dishwasher won't drain with the hose off of the disposal, there is a problem with the dishwasher that has nothing to do with your disposal installation. Hope this helps and good luck!

I've got a GE dishwasher, a GSD2800. It's giving a C4 code and it just won't drain the water. I turned the breaker to it on and off, shut off the water supply and tried to cycle it but no luck. I can...

If this is a new install where there was no dishwasher before. Or if your garbage disposal has been replaced. Then the plug in the garbage disposal inlet for the dishwasher drain may still be in place. You will have to disconnect the dishwasher drain and see if the inlet is clear. If not the garbage disposal will have to be removed, the plug punched out and then reinstalled. Good Luck!

Remove the drain line where it hooks into the disposal. See if the plug, which must be removed to let water thru, is still in there. I ran into this on a service call a few years back. Removed to plug and voila! Hope this helps!

Installation

It sounds like you have connected your dishwasher to a garbage disposal.

  1. The 2 hoses provided with your dishwasher connect together.
  2. You run the drain hose through a hole in the bottom/back of your cabinet, then up to the top of the cabinet, then connect it to the drain on the garbage disposal. (The reason that you run your drain up to the top of the cabinet is: This is called an air gap, and helps keep a little water in the drain line, which will prevent sewer gases from entering your dishwasher.)
  3. Be sure to knock the plug out of the drain of the garbage disposal. A garbage disposal is designed to work with or without a dishwasher. The plug is in the center of the drain. The best way to knock this plug out is to pull the garbage disposal, and with a flat screwdriver, knock the plug out.
  4. Then remove the plug from the disposal. Reinstall the disposal.
  5. Install the drain hose. The drain hose will connect right up to the disposal using the clamp provided with the dishwasher.
This should help you. If not please attach more info.
