Unable to encrypt router

I have entered the WEP key and am accessing the internet with my laptop - the wireless network shows my network as unsecured on the list of networks shown. The one listed below mine has a shorter number and says security-enabled wireless network (WPA). Shouldn't mine also say secureity enabled?

Check to ensure that you have "enabled" the security setting.Entering a key may not be enough, you might have to switch the security ON.

You have to check if you have the wep key enabled. when you put in the wep key, it should also be enabled so that your wireless network should say security-enabled wireless network. make sure to disconnect and connect again on your network after changing the settings to refresh your connection. hope this helps.

How do I set up a secure password?

For trendnet

Your Trendnet wireless router lets you broadcast your home network across your entire house, so you can access the Internet in any room. This signal may be powerful enough to extend into neighbors' houses, where they could easily jump on the network if it is unsecured. To protect your network, set up Wireless Encryption Protocol, or WEP, to encrypt data and prevent access unless the user enters the correct password.

Type "http://192.168.0.1" in your Internet browser's address bar and press "Enter." Enter "admin" for the username and leave the password field blank. Click "Log In" to log into your Trendnet wireless router's administrative program. Click "Wireless" from the left pane of the "Basic" tab. Click "WEP" under the "Wireless Security Mode" section at the bottom of the screen. Enter your preferred password for the network. A strong password is made up of a random selection of numbers and letters. Click "Save Settings" at the top of the screen to save your WEP settings.

How do I set up the wireless network key on my linksys router?

Hi.

This tip applies to any Linksys wireless router.

First you need to access the router control panel , and check wireless settings.

Therouter control panel is accessed connecting a computer to the router. This is done using an Ethernet cable, and entering router IP address in Internet Explorer address bar.

Here the cable:

Here the procedure.

Connect router to computer using a network cable (LAN cable with RJ45 connector).

On computer open Internet explorer and type router IP in the address bar (where you use to typewww.this.that ).The IP address is indicated on router user manual. Ifit has not been changed, 192.168.1.1 is the default for LinkSys brand home broadband routers. Press enter after typing the IP.

Enter router user name and passord. On older LinkSys routers, the default username is blank and the default password is "admin." On newer LinkSys routers, both the default usernameand the password are "admin". If that does not work, then defaultsettings had been changed. In that case you will need to reset therouter. See: Reset a LinkSys Router Password.

After entering right ID and password you will open the router control pane as HTML page in Internet Explorer.

In the router control panel choose the wireless setting tab to see or modify the password:

If you do not need to change wireless settings, then write down the encryption key, and set the same key on the laptop. Once the right key is set on the laptop, the connection will start automatically.

If more computersare connecting to this network, then do not reset or change thewireless settings. Simply write down the key on paper and setup thelaptop.

Remember that WAP encryption keys are case sensitive, Wep encryption keys are not.

The simplest encryption to choose is WEP.
WEP means wireless encryption key.

Open the router panel, go to wireless, and find key settings or set your own key.

If you have to set the key:

If you choose WEP 64, then the key that you need to set will be 10 characters key made by numbers and letters from A to F.

Close Internet Explorer to get out of the Linksys control panel.

Regards.

Cannot get internet access on a laptop because we do not know the "network security key" on an HP laptop through a Cisco Lynksis router.

Some later model wireless routers have the Password (ie.Encryption key) and the SSID already configured in the wireless router and this information is printed on a label on the bottom of the router.
These settings can be used to configure the wireless card and wireless adapters in your computer/laptop.
If these settings do not suit you, then it can be changed to suit your requirements.
The encryption key secures your data and wireless connection from unauthorized access. To configure the wireless settings in the router, connect a LAN cable from your computer to the wireless router, then open a Browser on your computer and enter the router's configuration IP address, then enter the admin login and password and then go to the wireless settings and configure the SSID and Encryption key.
The router's encryption key can be a Passphrase or the WEP or WPA or WPA2 key.If you use the Passphrase method select either WEP or WPA or WPA2 to generate the encryption key. You can enter the WEP or WPA or WPA2 key with 8 to 63 ASCII characters or 64 Hex digits.
Most people use Passphrase which is easier to remember eg. I was born in January 1988.
The strongest and latest security is WPA2, the weakest and oldest is WEP. To connect to your wireless router from the computer/laptop, configure the wireless card in your computer/laptop with the router's wireless settings ie SSID, plus the WPA or WPA2 encryption key. Then computer/laptops can communicate with your wireless router.

Cant access the wireless internet

Network Key (WEP, WPA, WPA2 Encryption key)To connectyour computer to a wireless router, you click the Refresh networklist, then Choose your wireless network and then click Connectto your secured Wireless Network, it will asks for a Network Keybefore allowing you to connect into your wireless network. This NetworkKey is either the WEP, or WPA or WPA2 Encryption key that is used toconfigure the Wireless Router. The Passphrase is an alternate way tosetup the Encryption key.
When you are requested for a Network Key, you can just enter the Passphrasethat was used to configure the Encryption key in the wireless router.http://www.fixya.com/support/r5270415-network_password_network_addressFor information on securing your wireless network, configuring the wireless router and configuring the wireless card in thelaptop/computer, please click on this link and follow my instructions :-http://www.fixya.com/support/r3559128-wireless_router_security

I need my wep key

The WEP encryption key (network key) is in your wireless router, without this key the wireless router won't allow the computer or laptop to connect to this wireless router.
I recommend you use WPA or WPA2 encryption, it is much stronger than WEP.
The WEP, WPA, WPA2 encryption key is in your router's wireless settings. Log into your router and got to the wireless settings, you will need to get the SSID and the encryption key. Then go to your computer or laptop's wireless card and configure it with the router's SSID and encryption key, so it will then connect to the wireless router and the Internet.

My wireless network is currently unsecure. how do

If you have a PC connected to your router through an Ethernet cable (i.e. wired), make the changes through it, because, if you do it through a wireless device, you would loose access as soon as you set your wireless secturity parameters. Anyway, start a browser (e.g. Internet Explorer) and go to 'http://192.168.0.1' (this is the default IP address for this router. If you have changed it, replace it with yours). An authentication screen will come up, Enter 'admin' as 'User name', leave the 'Password' field empty, and click on 'OK'. The web interface will come up. Click on the 'Wireless' icon (on the left side of the screen) and the 'Home' tab. On 'WEP', click the 'Enabled' checkbox. On 'WEP Encryption', if you choose '64bit' you must enter exactly 5 characters as your wireless passphrase. Otherwise, if you choose '128bit' (more secure, of course), your wireless password must be exactly 13 characters long. To make it easier for your, select 'ASCII' under 'Key Type', and enter either your 5-char long or 13-char long passphrase under 'Key1' (make sure its checkbox is ticked). Then, click 'Apply' (the green icon with a check mark). Your router is now secured. Now, make these same changes (i.e. WEP encryption method and the passphrase you've chosen) on all devices (computers and/or smartphones), in order to allow them to connect to your router through Wi-Fi.
Hope it works for you.
Cheers! Carlos
