We bought the house with an oven left behind. Probably because it was too big to move. It's got 6 top burners, double ovens and a grill top/broiler on the upper right. It was left with no paperwork so trying to figure out this question. It has 11 gas lights that burn continually and in the summer it warms up the kitchen and makes some days quite hot to be in there, besides making us kind of nervous since one of the pilot lights goes out occassionally and has to be relit. This must be a commercial stove that the previous owner installed and probably isn't allowed these days in a house. Can this be somehow converted over to a switch or system that would allow us to just turn on the gas to the oven when we are going to use it, and otherwise keep it off? This may be a stupid question but I don't understand how this oven works and gas makes me nervous. Thanks!
We use a Garland from the 1960's and pilot lights ARE scary and should make you nervous. This is why they are no longer allowed in new gas ranges. I mounted an inline gas shut off to the stove where the gas enters (on mine this is right in front on the left side). It turns on and off like a burner and when we are done cooking we simply shut off the gas there. To light the burners or the stove I use one of those long reach lighters. I go to bed knowing that NO gas is coming in.
We love the stove, it makes cooking more fun.

I just got my mom garland she had it for twenty years i do worry about the pilot light ? can this stove be change to electic start?
I am looking for a manual to assemble the Garland H283,someone had to dismantle the stove because it was to big to take out of the apartment

I am a gas technician, to answer some of your questions, the pilots on your burners and griddle can be shut off by turning the screws in that are next to the knobs, this will shut off the gas supply to the pilots and you can light them manually with a lighter stick, just light the lighter then turn on the burner. For the oven the most likely problem with it not lighting is the thermocouple, it is relatively easy to replace and any good hardware store should stock one. If you are not comfortable with working on these issues your local propane company should be able to help you.
I have the same Garland. Yes, it does feel warm all the time, but in the winter it keeps the kitchen cozy warm! If the pilots are kept clean, and the gas is regulated properly there is no problem. Don't be nervous, you can always smell when a pilot is not lit.

Our Church has the same Garland stove described!!
My problem is trying to get anyone who repairs/refurbishes these stoves.
All of the six top burners work fine as does one of the ovens.
The white ceramic pieces under the gridle are broken.
Someone told me that the thermal copler may be the reason the other oven doesn't work.
This site is my best hope, it seems to get in touch with someone here in Connecticut who might service this piece of equipment.
Any tips you might provide will be greatly appriciated!

Our leftmost griddle pilot goes out frequently and we have had to have the ovens pilots replaced 2 or 3 ttimes in the 20 years since we installed the stove new. My wife has the same complaint regarding the pilots always being on. This is OK during the fall winter and spring since the BTU's go into heating the kitchen. However, she complains about all the gas she wastes. Can this range be converted over to electronic pilots?
We have a very similar situation....wonderful Garland 6 burner stove with a pilot light out on 1 set of burners....faint smell of gas. Can we just simply relight that pilot light....or is that dangerous?
Also wondering who services these stoves in St. Paul, MN (or Minneapolis)

We have the same stove, we purchased it new over 30 years ago, with the price of fuel going up, we just turned of the pilots and use a barbecue lighter whenever we need to turn on the gas.
GARLAND NATURAL GAS RANGE, OVEN PILOT WENT OUT AND CANNOT RELIGHT, NO GAS TO THE OVEN BURNER OR PILOT, AND CANNOT MANUALLY LIGHT. WAS WORKING FINE DAY PREVIOUS.
IS THERMOCOUPLE WORN OUT? WHAT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED OR DONE TO GET WORKING AGAIN SAFELY?
