Goto the printer settings page and change the settings to print in black . Normally it is set for color - when color and black will print - You will find the question Print in Color Or Black Each has a check box. Check the box for black. With this setting, everything will print in black including the color text and graphics. Most printers let you do this. However, some printers keep telling you to replace the color cartridge.
You have to change the Print -> Settings -> Preferences
O Print in color (this means color inclufing B&W) O Print in Black (this means print in black only) Select the Print in Black When the printer says replace the color cartridge, just close the window instead of saying Yes or OK. This is not the official HP trouble shooting solution. But, it often works Good luck luciana44
Make sure Color button is selected (not Black or Grayscale)
Press OK
When color is selected, the printer will print Black as well. If Black is selected. the printer will not print color. Hope this will work for you. If this answer is helpful, please give a rating. luciana44
I changed the black cartridge with the color cartridge.
Then when I have a letter to print, I change change (or write) the letter text to yellow, red or blue.
Then I can print out a letter.
By printing the text as yellow, red or blue the cartridge will try to print with only 1 color, but will print out black.
If you do not use one of these primary printing colors the out put will be unusable.
Yes, this printer has fixed printheads and must have ink in each color to prevent damage to the printheads. Even when printing black only each color is spit in the servicing area to keep the printhead unclogged.

One ovbious option would be to have a friend print it out. I assume that is not an option.
Some printers just won't let you print if a single color is out. Yes, stupid. Try printing a blank page. If it fails, there is no other option but to replace the cartridge or print elsewhere. If the blank page test works, this next option/test is worth a try... Depending on the app you are using, you can specify the color breakdown of the colors you are using. In your case, it is possible that the text is set to a rich black (4-color) rather than just black. If that is the case, to test this most quickly, make a new file, and create a new black (black2), set to 100 black, 0% other colors. Type a wor and set it to print in that color and try to print it. If that works, apply the same technique to your real document. Hope it works. I've been stuck in the same situation, and some printers will just not let you print if a single color is out. Good luck. if you look at the options in the printer there should be an option to use the color cartridge to print black. How does this work? Well what the printer will do is mix all three colors to make a light black. This will eat up your color cartridge faster but is useful when you are out of black ink and you need to print
WORKAROUND:
Select EconoFast or Draft as the print quality setting in the printer properties. This will prevent the color cartridge from being used.

Try another color cartridge. The color cartridge is used to print grayscale images in Normal or Best print modes, so if one color has run out, the printout will have the wrong tint. With a full color cartridge, the colors can be properly combined to create a composite black.
CAUSE:
When printing with Normal or Best as the print quality setting, the HP Deskjet 710C or 720C or 722C series printer will use the color ink to improve print quality output, even when printing a grayscale image.
Make sure the printer settings are set properly to print in color on the PC. Even if there is a color cartridge, if the PC only tells it to print black ink it's not going to use the color cartridge.
