Check a good VW service manual, there is a special alignment gauge for the shifer assembly that is required to set up the shifter if it is dissasembled.

the tool is very reasonably priced, and can be found at several companies that sell specilized auto repair tools.

My guess the last owner probalby got a "short shift kit" and shifter rebuild kit from one
of the places that sell VW performance parts & messed up the installation. these kits work very well , if you put them in right!

sounds like the linkage came apart on the inside of the door. Remove the inner door panel & u will see the linkage probably disconnected. find out where its disconnected & reconnect it. there may be a clip which holds it together which u may find in the bottom of the door.

Just replaced the wiper motor on Jetta and wipers still won't work

Have you replaced only the motor or including the gear box (where the input shaft to the linkages is located)?

97 jetta struts

To replace the struts, remove the strut/spring as an assembly from the car. You'll need a strut spring compressor to remove the spring. Take your time and compress the spring slowly and evenly. You'll be able to remove the strut after the spring is compressed far enough. Installation is reverse of removal.

97 vw jetta

pop off the distributer cap and dry it out well. Put it back on and it should work. This happened to my 97 jetta too...also if I go through large puddles at a quick speed this may happen too. There isn't good electrical contact with the moisture.

97 Jetta GLS - Horn honks when I turn the wheel to the left

sounds like there is something in the wrong place in the horn button. it makes contact when you turn left just as if you had pushed the horn button. i wonder does your airbag light ever come on, i mean not just in the startup sequence, that's normal. probably you need to take the horn button part of the steering wheel apart and get things back in the right place or maybe replace some parts, but because of the airbag being right there too it's not something i would recommend that you do yourself. accidentally setting off an airbag is not a good thing.

97 jetta GT alarm won't let car start. how can i disable?

If you not good with a wrench don't try to remove it. I am not sure but you can try two different things one lock and unlock the driver side door about 3 time then put the key in the ignition and try to start it, someone else said to remove one of the battery cables wait about twenty min. or so and replace it and try. If you do have to have the guy fix make sure he takes it out and gives it to you.
