I am having a similar problem with my Toshiba PSAA2U-006019. The CDRW worked fine until today when I tried to birn a CD. It got some data burned and then poped the CD out with a line clearly burned on it. I then tried playing a DVD and it played for about 3 mins and then popped the DVD out with that same line burned into it. It is almost as if the laser is not moving past a certain point.

Try to check the bois if it is capable on booting in USB. you can load your copy of windows in the USB and boot it there...or try to look for another laptop that has the same CDROM connector.

That sounds like you have a very nasty virus that has infected the memory.
Switch off, unplug and remove the battery.
Using just the AC adapter, place your OS disk in the drive and as the laptop gets to the BIOS option, press F2 or whichever F button lets you in to set your master boot device as DVD/CD Rom.
close the laptop down and remove the AC Adapter.
Plug the AC Adapter back in and boot the laptop, that should get you into the CD ROM disk for formatting and replacing your system. I hope you remember to download all of the required drivers.
Hope this help.

Avaste is good but I suggest using another
program for your problem. Actually 2.

SUPERANTISPYWARE (free)
http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html

PANDA ACTIVE SCAN ONLINE (free)
http://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/solutions/activescan/

Also, when infected, I suggest running in safe
mode. Also delete (disable) Restore Point as
the infection could be in a backup set. Be sure
to enable it when done.

Hope this helps.

Computer boots up then shows windows 98 scrren

you may face either harddisk failure, a driver problem or virus infection:

tools: original win98-cd (or a bootable image

version of it), antivir-software on cd!

- please check whether it is possible to boot from win98-cd, with cd-rom support, not from harddisk.

(such option should be availabe after bios-load is over)

if not:

leave the setup process without fully installing
(press F3 button when asked for repair or install option)

in both cases :

type at the dos-prompt:

c:\win98/win

(command for changing to harddisk, windows-folder, booting windows from harddisk, but without loading all the drivers as usually)

win98 should come up in protected mode or give error messages.

- access cd-drive and execute vir-scan.
- delete and/or repair infected files
- turn down, attempt to reboot from hd
- if still impossible reboot from win98-cd,
run repair of installation and try once again
standard boot

problem solved? if not, take down error messages consult fixya again!

Boot sector virus

Hi, regardless of the amount of users on the pc, the virus is resident in the pc, not a persons profile. Bad news is the only way of 100% resolving this is by a fresh install of the operating system. Place the operating disk in the cd drive, shut down and reboot, click fresh install from the options that are presented to you.

I cant identify the prolem

It looks like you may have a boot sector virus. A boot sector virus is one that infects the first sector, i.e. the boot sector, of a floppy disk or hard drive. Boot sector viruses can also infect the MBR. All disks and hard drives are divided into small sectors. The first sector is called the boot sector and contains the Master Boot Record (MBR). The MBR contains the information concerning the location of partitions on the drive and reading of the bootable operating system partition.

When disinfecting a boot sector virus, the system should always be booted from a known clean system disk. On a DOS-based PC, a bootable system disk can be created on a clean system running the exact same version of DOS as the infected PC. From a DOS prompt, type:
    SYS C:\ A:\
and press enter. This will copy the system files from the local hard drive (C:\) to the floppy drive (A:\).
If the disk has not been formatted, the use of FORMAT /S will format the disk and transfer the necessary system files. On Windows 3.1x systems, the disk should be created as described above for DOS-based PC's. On Windows 95/98/NT systems, click Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs and choose the Startup Disk tab. Then click on "Create Disk". Windows 2000 users should insert the Windows 2000 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, click Start | Run and type the name of the drive followed by bootdisk\makeboot a: and then click OK. For example:
    d:\bootdisk\makeboot a:
Follow the screen prompts to finish creating the bootable system disk. In all cases, after the creation of the bootable system disk, the disk should be write protected to avoid infection.

Once the OS loads, run your anti-virus software and it should clean the virus.

Should this not help, I'm afraid the only other alternative would be to reformat the HDD and reinstall XP again from a bootable disc.

Hope that helps..
