Olympus DS4000 recorder "new file" button broken

My Olympus DS4000 recorder's "new file" button is not working right. It only allows me to dictate into one big audio file instead of in individual files as I used to be able to. Is it possible you can instruct me on how I could fix this? The unit was purchased in April, 2006.

This is a classic: the 4-position-slide component (which includes the NEW button) is the weakness of the DS-4000. You need to get this replaced. If you are UK based, contact BES in Luton who will charge you circa GBP70 for the replacement.

Olympus ds-330 will not download. I have the right drivers and i changed the usb cable thinking that might solve the problem. I cannot download the device. It says power surge exceeds limit. can you please...

The dictation device port where the cable inputs into the machine is not working. There is no way to fix this problem with spending some money. When this happens, you need to find a compaticord at RadioShack and download directly into the computer with a recording software to record the voice files. Or you can purchase a new dictation device. I hope this helps.

Picking up dictation where we left off after playback DS 40 voice

Unfortunately with this recorder, if he hits the stop button and rewinds it will go back to the beginning of the file. He may want to look at our DS-2300 or DS-2400 recorders as they both have a feature on them of a NEW button which will allow him to stay in the same file until he presses NEW to create the next recording.

Is it possible to rewind and overwrite dictation with Olympus VN-2100PC

Unfortunately with this device the VN-2100PC it is not possible to rewind and overwrite any dictations that were done. Each time the record button is pressed and then the stop button is pressed it will create a new file. They may want to look for a DS-2300 or a DS-2400 recorder as these devices have the ability to rewind and allow you to dictate over previously recorded information in the same file. There is a button on these devices called "New" that allows you to stay within the same file until you press New to start the next audio file.

Olympus DS4000 says Memory Error

I had several cases lke this with clients. One of the dictations is corrupted. It's the "one" here that matters. When you connect the DS-4000 to a PC, it appears in your "My Computer" as a Removable Drive. Browse this drive, and you will find the dictations in one of the folders (A, B, C etc...) or they might be scattered between folder depending on how your user records.
Try to copy dictation manually from that drive to the matching folders on the PC (by default My Documents-->DSSPlayer-->Messages-->FolderA, FolderB..., although you might have changed that).

At some stage one of the dictation files will refuse to copy/paste: that's the corrupted one; however should should be able to save the others. Once you have salvaged all but one dictation, you can do a format of the card. In fact, I suggest you chage the card, as corruption is usually a sign of worst things to come...

Using this procedure, at least only one dictation will need re-dictated.

I hope this helps.

How do you edit a recording on an Olympus DS-30 dictatation machine. All I want to do is record over what I have dictated but the machine just creates a new file everytime I press the record button again....

Unfortunately with this recorder it is not possible to edit over a previously recorded file. Each time you hit record and then stop it will create a new file each time. That's the way the recorder is designed. If you need to be able to stay within the same file you may want to check out the DS-2300 or the DS-2400 as it has a NEW button on it that allows you to stay within the same file until you press NEW to start a new file.

Editing? Can dictation be paused, then go back part way and....

you can not do this with the Olympus ws-100, you need a dictation machine that has the editing function which allows you to easily insert, overwrite, partially erase files and continue on the same file, most of the digital dictation units have NEW FILE BUTTON , you will stay recording on the same file till you press new.
Look at Olympus DS-2300. Olympus DS-33300 or ds-4000.
