there are 5 generations of iPod touch!
- for instance the iPod touch 3rd gen. can install only iOS 5.1.1 whereas the iPod touch 4th gen. can use iOS 6.1.6 as the latest iOS.

According to information provided by the manufacturer, the "software upgrades" that are included with specific 16GB iPod Touch models are part of Apple's January software upgrade. The upgrade provides e-mail functionality, access to Google maps, weather forecasts, stock market tracking and a notepad program for the iPod Touch.

Apart from this slight change in pre-installed software, there should not be any other difference between the two 16GB iPod Touch models available through your local Best Buy™ store - they have identical hardware specifications.

Please keep in mind that a product's model number may change slightly whenever a minor cosmetic or major software update occurs. In this particular case, the model number MA627LL/A was superseded with model number MA627LL/B to reflect the changes in the factory-installed programs. Both models are considered to be the same generation of hardware.

to update to iOS 5 is only possible on iPhone 3GS / 4 / 4S with connecting the device to iTunes on a computer.
- Plug the iPhone to your computer and open up iTunes under devices click on your iPhone and then click on check for update.

How do i upgrade the iOs on iPod touch 3rd generation MC086LL

The 32 GB and 64 GB configurations of the iPod touch 3rd Generation are only supported by the last version of iOS 5. They are not supported running iOS 6 or subsequent versions of the operating system.
The 8 GB configuration is not even supported by iOS 5.
