I have recently changed computers, set up Netgear DSG834 router on vista pc - no problems, wireless adaptor (WG111v2) on XP computer. The connection shows as excellent strength and connected. When I start internet explorer it doesn't connect and I have to unplug the adaptor and reconnect it - this is obviously frustrating, any ideas?
Check the wireless IP address on the XP computer. try to ping default gateway and see whether its giving succesfull reply, after that do ping yahoo.com and check successfull pinging. if it pings successfully the yahoo website , then you should go online.

Is there any other computer online through the same router ? if yes then the router must be working. If there is no other computer , then you will need to connect the computer to the router and check the wired connection first. If that works then there must be problem with the wireless connection. open the router set up and check the wireless settings of the router. Install the Adapter using the CD, After installing if its windows XP it will ask you to choose XP utility or Netgear utility, choose windows and scan for the network.
If its windows vista , go to start-Connect to - u will see the network name here , try connecting to it
I contacted Bigpond after my whole internet collapsed due to my amature abilities in fixing the internet. >_<"
yet they fixed my internet connection by disconnecting my current (DLINK DIR-300) router from the network. hmmmm... the technician also confirmed that my current broadband modem (2WIRE 2071-A) isnt capable of supplying a shared connection to more than one computer!! she also directed me towards a modem with an inbuilt wifi router that "supposedly" is the best option right now. (2701HGV-W) I'm a bit shaky and the stupid NETGEAR adaptor problem still exists - im willing to buy the new modem if its guaranteed to abolish this problem and give me a better internet wise outlook - please any suggestions will be appreiciated =)
Not sure if this is where you are looking, but it probably is. click START then CONNECT TO then SHOW ALL CONNECTIONS then right click LOCAL AREA CONNECTION click STATUS then SUPPORT,,, or CONTROL PANEL then NETWORK CONNECTIONS then right click LOCAL AREA CONNECTIONS then click STATUS then SUPPORT tab See what you have there for an IP address Is it the computer you don't have an IP for or the router? In my case my computer IP the 8th or last digit is the next number after what it is for the router. The other numbers are the same
Uninstall any software the router came with on any of the computers, it's not needed.
Reset the router by holding down the small pinsized hole in the back for 20 seconds.
Make sure modem is hooked up to router IN port.
Make sure all Windows updates are installed in a PC.
Make sure wireless card switch is in the on position.
DO NOT encrypt anything at first, try connecting under an open network. Meaning do not change any of the routers factory settings. If you can connect, continue form here to encrypt. Hope this helps!!!!
