Gateway laptopo md2614u not booting up

When powering on, "A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". After doing so, the same message occurred. There is a brief Gateway display before the error occurs. I had previously done a system restore because it would not boot up. That did not appear to improve the situation.

SOURCE: A disk read error

Hi,

The "clicking" and "disk read error" indicates a hard drive failure.  When the PC boots it can no longer read some files from or the entire HD.  The corrective measure would be to replace the HD and install your OS and programs. Alternately, you may try and reformat then re-install but then you would be operating with an unpredictable storage media and perhaps prolonging the inevitable.

If your reason for Safe Mode is to be able to access your files for purposes of backup, the constant trying/on-off just might worsen the condition of the HD. You can still try recovering by installing the HD in question inside a 2.5 enclosure to USB and install it as a removable device in a 2nd PC where you can try recover files.

Should you install a new HD and install the OS in your Gateway, you actually can use that to try and recover from the old HD. Recovery is 50/50.

Good luck and kind regards.

SOURCE: Bootmgr is missing on Windows XP System. Gateway

1.Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD drive, and then restart the computer.
2.Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD drive if you are prompted.
3.When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
4.Press 1 (One) to select windows XP and then hit enter.
5.When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
6.At the command prompt, Type Bootrec /RebuildBcd and then press ENTER.
7.If the Bootrec.exe tool runs successfully, it presents you with an installation path of a Windows directory. To add the entry to the BCD store, type yes. A confirmation message appears that indicates the entry was added successfully. 8.If the Bootrec.exe tool cannot locate any missing Windows installations, you must remove the BCD store, and then you must re-create it. To do this, type the following commands in the order in which they are presented. Press ENTER after each command.
Bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup

ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old

Bootrec /rebuildbcd

1.Restart the computer

Not booting. "disk read error occurred"

This means you HDD is either corrupt or faulty, try downloading a copy of Hirens BCD to try to access the HDD (or use and external HDD enclosure) and if you can, put it back in the laptop, if not reformat it and reinstall windows.

Problem with a disk read error

There are a couple of possibilities.

1. The hard drive is defective.

2. The operating system is corrupt.

The easiest way to test this is to run the restore cd that came with the computer to reload Windows.

If you get this error while running the restore cd then you will need to get a new hard drive.
