After several months, the battery would not charge any more. dell sent me a new power adapter. that did not fix the problem. i was able to charge my battery on a friend's computer, so there is nothing wrong with my battery Upon power on, I get a black screen with with letters saying, unknown AC power. Press f1 to bypass/f2 to go to start up menu/f3 to not show warning again. After pressing f1 Vista boots up and the battery shows 0% available (plugged in, not charging) So I'm running off the wall adapter. Same problem. After about 6 months, the battery wouldn't charge. I used Dell online chat support. They sent a new battery. That didn't solve it, so they gave me a bios patch (upgrade). That seemed to work...for a couple weeks. Now, I'm getting the AC power error message after boot. Am waiting right now to chat with support again. Started at 100th in queue. Am now 58th. There is hope!
Hello,
This problem has arised because your motherboard hasn't identified your battery. So, this is motherboard problem.
next time when you chat with the dell representatives, tell them that your motherboard is not recognizing your battery. They would arrange a pickup and would have it repaired in their center.
Good luck,

Jegan
I keep reading these answers that lead us nowhere.
This is basically a vista problem and microsoft needs to address it. they have failed to do so, so far.
Dont think your pc or the batter are at fault, it is vista that has failed to provide proper software for the battery to work.

I am having the same issue with my Inspiron 15R N5110 , I was told it is my mother board as well. Dell is willing to fix it at a mere cost of $500. I'm extremely upset as my system is only 8 weeks old. Good Luck! I am hopeing to find something other than a $500 fix to take czre of this issue.
