Kenmore 24642 Top Load Washer Problem

I have a Kenmore washer that is filling as normal but when it comes to the agitate/ spin cycle it does neither and makes a very loud grinding/humming noise. It does drain the water out. There is no electrical smell, or any other offensive machine smells. I was told by my local appliance center that there are no belts involved in the newer washers. Any suggestions as to what the problem may be?

I have a Kenmore top load washer Model 20904. First stopped spinning then stopped agitating. Some noise.Suspected a coupling problem.I opened the back panel, removed the console, wasn't sure how to get down there. Seems my model is different from 24642. Same way to disassemble? Remove the cabinet from the base? Also, Back panel is tied thru a plastic bracket to the hose underneath. Can't remove the hose from the bracket (very tight). Thanks, Mike.

If this is a top load washer, more than likely you have a broken motor coupler.  Be sure the unit is unplugged before starting any repair.  You have to remove the console hold down screws (may have to remove the console cover caps to get to them, or they may be in the back).  Pull the console towards you then up and fold over the top of the washer.  You will see 2 gold colored clips, pop them out, then remove the lid switch wire harness plug.  Fold the cabinet top towards you, and remove the cabinet.  You will see the pump lower center.  Remove the two clips, and swing the pump out of the way.  Unplug the motor wiring harness.  Remove the two clip hold down screws, then unclip the motor hold down brackets.  The motor will now fall (be sure to hold securely) and pull motor out.  You will see the motor coupler on the end of the motor, a round rubber coupler, and another drive coupler in the hole on the transmission.  You will see the prongs on the plastic drive parts that go into that rubber part.  Most of the time, these will break off.  Remove everything, then reinstall (be sure to drive the couplers flush with the shafts), line up motor/rubber/transmission shafts, and reinstall everything.  Let me know if you need further help or information.  Part number for motor coupler is 285753A (Sears, APW, FSP, Whirlpool #'s).  You can also usually find these on ebay, but they arent that expensive (maybe $10 to $15).  Good Luck!!!!   Jim

sounds like your motor coupling has broken, cost about $20 for the part, can get from your local appliance shop! if you can hear the motor running on the agitate or spin cycle but nothing happens, more than likely the coupling has broken,

I have a Kenmore top loading washer model #110 and won't agitate

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer.!retrieve.pd?pop=true&modelNumber=110.23912100

Also see the Whirlpool (Kenmore) Service Manual for top load, direct drive washers.$FILE/L-55.pdf

The first thing I'd try is using a different cycle. If the washer works as it should, the problem points to the timer.

I'd also check to make sure that when replacing the switch, the connections to the timer haven't come loose.

Since you've replaced the Lid Switch, the motor has power for the drain and spin cycles.

These washers use a reversing motor. The motor turns one way for agitating and reverses for the drain and spin.

Since you cannot hear anything when it is supposed to be agitating, the problem does point to the timer or motor.

No agitation or spin in any cycle? If so and the machine will drain check the coupler.

Hello aksward,
Welcome to Fixya.

Here are some suggestions for any Kenmore washers

Let me know how it goes. I'm still thinking and searching my repair manuals!
Please remember to leave a rating!

Washer stops, won't fill, rinse or agitate

• Check the following:
Is the power cord plugged into a grounded 3 prong outlet?
Is the indicator on the Cycle Control knob properly lined up
with a cycle? Turn the Cycle Control knob to the right slightly
and pull to start.
Are the water inlet valve screens clogged?
Are both the hot and cold water faucets turned on?
Is the water inlet hose kinked?

• Does the water level seem too low, or does the washer
appear to not fill completely? The top of the agitator is
much higher than the highest water level. This is normal and
necessary for clothes to move freely.
• Has a fuse blown or is the circuit breaker open? If problem
continues, call an electrician.
• Are you using an extension cord? Do not use an extension
• Is the washer in a normal pause in the cycle? The washer
pauses for about 2 minutes during certain cycles. Allow the
cycle to continue. Some cycles feature periods of agitation
and soak.
• Is the washer overloaded? Wash smaller loads.
• Is the lid open? The lid must be closed during operation.
Washer will not agitate or spin with the lid open.

Kenmore washer just stopped

Open and close lid, listen for 'clicking' sound. If no 'clicking' sound, check/replace lid switch. Also try tightening the lid hinge screws on the left side. if these screws come loose, the machine will not operate

after it fills do you hear any sound and does it go to spin on its own or do you turn the timer your self it could be a bad pressure switch thats what we are trying to determine
