Question about RCA 14F512T 14" TV

1 Answer

Turns on and off at all times of the day and night

All night long this TV has started turning on and off.  I have had to unplug it.  When I plug it back in, in the morning I can watch sometimes and sometimes it turns off.  It will turn on and off all in a matter of 60 seconds, over and over. The only way to turn it off for good is unplug.

Our TV is doing the same thing - off and on all by itself. Prior post says repair could be expensive. Can a handy homeowner fix it, or does it require a service tech?

Have same problem. TV less than one year old. Started turning itself on and off. This is not an expensive set but I don't want to throw it out. Forget trying to contact RCA that's imposable. So I'm looking for a reasonable repairman. Would like to know if anyone with this problem has had it fixed and what it cost.

tv turns off and on by itself, scans channels, won't let remote work. need to unplug it. TV was hardly ever used. any ideas?

My set is doing the same thing. The volume goes up and down and channels change by themselves. The TV is in a guest room and has barely been used over the last two years. What a waste.

tv turn on and off by itself and doesn't respond to remote control.

  • Anonymous Dec 21, 2008

Television is controlled by a ghost or has taken on a life of its own. Turns off and on by itself. Remore will turn it off and on also but television then decides what it wants to do...sometimes will stay on or might cut itself off.

first it started turning on off by every time I turn it shows the blue screen only half the size it should like if it had a problem with the vertical transistor but it turns off again ...

I purchased my TV on 5/20/07 and it turns off by itself. I contacted RCA tech support but it was a waste of my time. I got a tech in India...the background noise was horrible and she simply walked me through pressing the "Sleep" button on the remote to ensure that the sleep timer was set to "off". There should have been a recall on this RCA model as too many customers have experienced similar issues.

This RCA, 14", flat screen TV of mine, also keep turning itself on and off, to a point that I just have to unplug it altogether...when it does come on, it then continuously keeps scanning through all the stations, 1 thru 122 and starts again, and I can't tune into any one station!...what is going on????

Tv repeatedly turns on & off by itself

Given the age of that unit, It may not be possible to get parts for the unit. The problem you are experiencing sounds like a poor connection on either the receiver for the remote or the main board power unit.

If you have eliminated the obvious things the tv must have a fault...

The obvious things - a night prowler with a remote, a cat walking across your remote, a ghost that likes to watch tv, somebody sleepwalking...

It is possible the infra red signal needed to switch on the tv is not coming from your remote. You can test this by removing the batteries or taking the remote to bed with you. If the tv still turns on then tape over the infra red receiver on the tv to eliminate the chance of some stray infra red beam from elsewhere being the culprit. If that stops the tv turning on you need heavier curtains or blinds or the tv moving perhaps, but if the tv still switches on it has a fault.

There is another thought. Digital TVs and digiboxes are often programmed to wake up periodically to check for software updates. Mine wakes up at 3am but it only checks for software updates and doesn't switch on the tv, but maybe this is what your tv is doing.

A further thought - a tv often has the functions of an alarm clock. They have a sleep function so they can switch themselves to standby after you have fallen asleep and then can wake you in the morning. Perhaps the alarm has been inadvertantly set for 2am?

These days it is rather anti-social to leave any appliance on standby. Rather than unplugging the set every night and worrying about the kids, why not arrange for the tv to be plugged in to a switched outlet so the kids can switch it on or alternatively use a cheap plug-in timeswitch to prevent the set switching on in the wee small hours...

TV turns off when you change the channel

sounds like a power fault, prob just weak capacitors if you can change them it would not cost a lot to replace them, when you change channel it draws more power and if its at its limit it will turn off as the capacitors cannot take it. few £'s or $s to get the replacement capacitors, you will probably see the blown capacitors on the power board as the will not have flat tops they will be rounded, change them same for same i.e 16v 330 for same 105c type would be best. it will say this on the capacitor.

My TV turns on and off randomly!

Remove the rear cover & turn set on, pull all the connectors off one at a time and push back on. I have had loose connectors cause this problem, and by doing the above has fixed it. Note do the pull off and push back on of the connectors, with the tv unplugged from the AC outlet.
