We have our citiZ for about 3 years now and love it. Since 1 week I put the capsule into the machine, push start, the coffee starts coming but within seconds it becomes a dark brown wash with all the coffee grounds in it. We called Nespresso customer service, they suggested to send it in for about $120 repair (will give us a loaner in the meantime). Help! Can I fix it myself?
The problem you are having is common when these units have been in use for a while. There is a sludge buildup preventing the brewed coffee from leaving the brewer soon enough. Straighten out a paper clip and use the wire to open up the blockage in the hole where the coffee would enter the coffee cup. You may have to go up from the bottom in order to do this thoroughly.

2. find a thin small rubber band. size-wise, ideally, the rubber band will fit loosely around your thumb; with a very small gap between the rubber and your thumb.
3. put the rubber band around the collar of the capsule. the band should be put over the top of the capsule and pushed down until it stops flush against the flange (rim). if the band is correctly placed, the band will be just 1mm flat inside the rolled bare aluminum edge (rim).
4. insert the capsule in your citiz machine as usual. optional: you can orient one of the puncture holes at 12 o'clock position (top dead center) during the insertion process. this time, it will work. you will find the capsule will eject cleanly with the rubber band intact.
5. save the rubber band.

This is caused by the water overflowing the filter. If you changed brands of filters, try going to a different filter that is not so heavy. If you haven't, the hole in the bottom of your filter basket might have built-up coffee in it, slowing the flow down. Try putting a sharp knife in the hole & turning it around to clean off any build-up.
