SOURCE: Toshiba won't boot

You can boot from XP cd.
When prompted..press [R] this will launch recovery console.
Choose your windows installation (typically by pressing [1] press return..
When prompted for password type chkdsk /r
Press return..Windows will fix errors..type Exit and press return..
Let me know if that helps.

You need your Vista disk to re-install Vista.

If you don't want to go to the expense, download and install Ubuntu, its a free opterating system and now on version 10.4, its pretty good.

SOURCE: why do i have an intermittent problem with my laptop freezing up during startup? startup?

You may have a bug. You may start by going to control panel and see how many programs are trying to start up at the same time. When my laptop does that I normally go to the control panel and stop programs and keep them from turning on at start up. you really dont need all programs to start up at the same time. This may cause freezing and longer times to start at start up.

When starting up laptop all i get is the vaio logo then a blank screen with a blinking underscore in the top left corner

Try rebooting and pressing F8 when it starts until after the Vaio logo - this should allow you to attempt to boot into safe mode (without networking for now).

When in safe mode - open a command prompt by pressing the windows key on your keyboard and R.
Now type - cmd - (not the - )

A black box comes up so type - chkdsk /f - then answer Y - press enter and close the window.

Restart the system and see if it boots into Windows.

Hope this helps - good luck.

My toshiba satallite l305-s5909 wont display a screen. I turn it on and after the toshiba logo goes away the screen turns to black with a funny symbol and cursor blinking in the top left corner

Restart your laptop, as soon as it powers on (even before you see the logo), repeatedly tap on F8 to get to the advanced boot menu. Select the option for Last Known Good Configuration and see if it would boot up. If not, Repeat the procedure but this thime, choose safe mode. If you're able to boot to safe mode, you can just do a system restore to a date when it was working fine.

When I turn my Toshiba A45-S151 laptop on, I first get the screen that shows the Toshiba logo and has the four icons under the logo. Usually the next screen is black, has a cursor in the top left corner,...

That blinking cursor is the way in which the BIOS is telling you that Windows is not loading because its most critical, core files have been corrupted beyond repair. The only thing you can do is to reinstall using the recovery cd or your own Windows install disk.

Blank screen blinking underscore Toshiba laptop after startup

if you can get into the BIOS-setup, verify if your hard drive is recognised as a bootable device and set as first boot device. if the disk is not recognised, you might want to verify if the P-ATA/S-ATA controllers are enabled. if this is all the case, but the problem remains, then your hard disk is probably broken.

Does boot up

If you are getting the underscore in the upper left corner of the screen the laptop is not froze, however it cannot find an OS (Operating system- aka windows) This leaves us with 2 possible options:
1. Your system (Bios) has changed boot priority
  • Depending on your computer you may get a prompt to press a key to change the boot order, if this is the case make sure your C: drive is selected, or Hard disk drive as it is a laptop you should only have one.
  • If you do not get a prompt for a boot priority screen you will have to enter the BIOS or system setup, this is ussaly done by pressing "Delete" or "F2" when you first boot up you will see the screen and it will tell you what key to press. Go into the bios and look for the boot priority settings and make sure your hard drive is at the top of your list
2. Your computer's hard drive has been corrupted and you may have to reinstall the OS.
