Make sure enough gas is coming thru the piolet orface for the flame to touch the thermocouple. you may need to clean out the pipe that feeds the piolet orface and clean (make sure you can see light thru the piolet orface hole so that gas can come thru) with enough pressure to have the flame touch the thermocouple.

small spiders like to get into these places and spin webs and sometimes a blast of compressed air will clear out the poilet gas feed pipe & get you going again.

The thermocouple not only keeps the pilot on but lets the gas valve know its okay to open on a call for heat, remove your thermocouple and clean it with a fine grit sandpaper and if this doesn't work replace it all together.

Every year I have a problem getting it to light. The pilot is lit but the heater will not turn on. It is 8 years old and I have been having trouble with it since day one. My pool guy comes out fires it up...

First, check the gas valve and make sure the valve in all the way to "on" not "pilot".After shutting to off for the winter, and not turning the valve all the way on start up could be it. If that is ok, check/replace the pilot generator next to the pilot lite. One question. Does the pilot go out soon after calling for heat? Next, if you have it on "spa" or "pool" on the temperature adjusting module, try the other setting. eg. If it is on "pool", switch the knob to "spa" and adjust the temperature.

Pilot light on but heater will not start

check the high-limit switches. Under the inlet/outlet header. if either is open it will not allow you to fire up. my 150 degree switch was corroded and after jump9ng out, bam it worked.
