Car starts then cuts out

Hi
I have a 1991 toyota corolla gti, the car starts fine but then the rev counter goes to max(9000 rpm!) and the car cuts out. if you try again it does the same thing. it starts everytime but then cuts out. its not the idle valve as the car over revs not under revs. any help will be greatly appreciated.
thanks

    hi,
yes i do mean 9000 rpm! the gti starts redlining at 7500 rpm and maxs out at 9000rpm!
when i start it it starts for a second, the revs go up to 2500 rpm then all of a sudden they shoot upto 9000rpm and the car cuts out. this whole process takes about 2 secs max. if you try to restart it will restart but then will do the same thing and cut out. any help will be much appreciated thanks.

    hi,
its a 4age engine. ignition module, is this the one mounted just below the windscreen on the passenger side? i disconnected it and it wouldn't start(makes sense!), but isn't this just used to start the car? it starts fine its just after it starts thats when the problem begins.

The rev counter in my 2000 corolla is reading incorrectly

Macsry2k answer makes the the most trouble shooting sense. Problem is definitely electric. Since the alternator is where the RPM reading comes from, this is the best place to start. Good luck!

1994 model toyota corolla - AE100

Don't think there's anything wrong with it. That's pretty normal for mine. If it's unusual behaviour for your car, check your coolant level. I almost ran mine dry last year and found in the days leading up to it that my idle revs were sitting around 2000 once the car heated up. If it turns out to be that I can give you some real handy tips for changing your coolant and flushing all the junk out. Much cheaper than a mechanic and good if you have a spare hour.
