You need to check to see if the depth sounder transducer is connected or functioning. It might be turned off, the connectors may be bad or the transducer is bad. I don't have the 498 manual in front of me but I think there is a test function under the setup menu. I'd check my connections (the usual suspect) then run that.
Garmin tech support is pretty good/quick. So don;t be afraid to give them a call.
If the transducer is out of the water, you will not get a reading and see the flashing depth. You should hear and feel the clicking in the transducer when out of the water and working properly. Are you getting a temp reading when out of the water?
Had same problem,,, you need to perform an "Auto-Locate" With unit plugged in but not turned on, push the Page and Power buttoms at the same time,,, continue to hold down the buttons until the "I Agree" message appears. Then release the buttons, agree by pushing Enter. The system will then go through an Auto Locate sequence that corrected my problem.
I would contact Garmin and get their price for a repair. Navigation is too important to trust to a repair that may or may not be correct. Just go to http://www.garmin.com and click on the support tab.
