I have used this machine for 4 yrs with no problem, but having recorded from a vhs I find that I cannot finalize the disc.On using the remote a message appears "remote dvd 1" I have tried changing the batteries.
I can still record from VHS but have to use front panel controls to record and play.

You need to FINALIZE the DVD-R you recorded in that unit for it to be playable on other DVD players. This function should be part of the on-screen menu for your unit. (in Panasonic DVD recorders, it's under DVD MANAGEMENT in the FUNCTIONS menu).
If the disc you recorded is already loaded, but stopped, press SETUP on your remote - an on screen menu should appear.
Using the UP/DOWN arrow keys, select DVD MENU and press ENTER. Use the UP/DOWN arrow keys again to select FINALIZE and press ENTER.
A message box will popup 'Finalize disc?' use the UP/DOWN arrow keys to select YES then press ENTER. Finalizing should start and may take a while to complete.
Once complete, the disc is now playable on other DVD players. (from page 32 of the owners manual with the heading 'PLAYING THE DISCS IN OTHER DVD PLAYERS')
It sounds like the recorder will only record the dvd+ format, which does NOT need finalizing to play in other machines. ( you can record a dvd- , play it back on the machine you recorded it on, but need to finalize it to play on other machines) The other units may only accept dvd-.(dvd- being the same format as you would buy or rent a film on) One option, record the dvd on a dvd+rw (if possible) then copy to a dvd-r using your computer. The average use of a dvd+ is 1000 recordings. There are many free disc burning suites available to download. Just google "free disc burning software" and take your pick. I use 1 called "magix goya base" for copying disc to disc and "NTI" for burning to HDD and then to disc, if you only have use of 1 drive.
Insert the VHS and rewind or fast forward to the point you want to begin copying from.
Insert the disc you plan to use and format it if necessary. It will usually prompt you if it is necessary to do so.
Put the television on the channel or input needed to view the recorder on-screen.
Select the DVD drive and set the record mode you prefer - XP, SP, LP or EP.
There are two things you can do:
1. Press and hold the dubbing/copying button on the recorder itself in the direction of the DVD for 3 seconds. If you are using a DVD-R/RW or +R you will receive a message stating to press Play to record without finalizing or press Record to record and finalize. If you are using +RW or -RAM, these cannot be finalized - therefore this message will not display.
2. You can access the Functions menu and go to Copy, then select the copy direction VHS to DCD and select Start Copying.
I have three Panasonic DVD recorder/Vhs combos and I get the same problem from time to time...it may be the disks you are using. Mine absolutely hate Sony disks. I have the best luck with TDK or Maxell. You also must clean your unit frequently, if you do alot of recording. I use my units daily.
