Stinky inner washer tub

How do you remove the plastic filter on the under side of the inner washer tub? There is residue and crud built up between the plastic and the metal tub. It looks like the tabs can be released but the don't release easily. I'm afraid that the plastic is brittle and will break. If it does break can I just buy the plastic filter or do I have to buy a whole new tub?

SOURCE: Door Latch has broken plastic tab

The door latch assembly comes as one piece. It would actually be much simpler to purchase the new latch and replace the whole assembly instead of trying to put pieces and parts back inside a latch that may or may not work after all your hard effort. If you decide to replace the latch, follow these steps: 1. Unplug the machine. 2. Remove the lower kick plate panel if you like (this can help you reach the latch from a couple of different angles). 3. Open door and feel around the rubber door boot for a wire hoop. At the bottom of the door open is a tension spring. Pull the spring apart and remove the wire hoop from the groove. 4. Gently lift the rubber boot from the groove around the door opening and push inside the machine so you can access the inside of the casing. 5. The door latch assembly is located inside the case on the right-hand side. There should be a couple of wire connectors going to it (remember how they come off). Be careful with the wires, they are small and can break. 6. Unplug the wire connectors and remove the three screws holding the latch in place from the outside of the casing. 7. There should also be a plastic retainer holding the latch in place. Remove latch from retainer. 8. Install new door latch by placing it in the plastic retainer, first. 9. Plug wires connectors in. 10. Re-install the three door latch screws. 11. Re-install rubber door boot around the door opening. Make sure it is properly seated in the groove. 12. Reinsert wire hoop. starting at the top of the door opening, carefully push the wire hoop into the groove and work your way all the way around the bottom where the tension spring would be. (A second set of hands to hold the wire hoop in replace would be handy at this point). 13. Pull tension spring apart and snap into groove. Done. Hopefully this will take care of your problems. Of course, you may not like the idea of having to purchase a whole new door latch assembly, or the effort required to remove and replace. But, it sure beats trying to rebuild the old one. I hope this helps.

I work at Whirlpool, and we recommend a product called Affresh to help eliminate washer odor. Affresh washer cleaner tablets break up many of the residues that bacteria, mildew and mold grow on, and it removes them, leaving you a cleaner washing machine.

For a limited time, they’re running a promotion on whirlpool’s website that will get you free shipping on a 3 –pack of Affresh tablets! You just enter EAF822 as the promo code, and they’ll ship you the packet at no cost to you!

SOURCE: Duet washer very loud when spinning

No you do not have problems with your bearings (especially if you can rotate the basket and it rotates nice and smooth).

What has happened to your machine is exactly what happened to mine: One of the three 'legs' on the shaft support attached to the rear or the basket has broken. The reason it broke is because the bracket is made of die-cast aluminum alloy that is being attacked by galvanic corrosion. See attached pictures of the corroded shaft support, including a close-up of the break. This is what you will find when your machine is taken apart.

2c70ebe.jpg
You can verify this failure mode by slowly rotating the basket and observing the position of the basket at its maximum off-center location. While the basket is at this position look at the back of the basket and you should see one of the three 'indents' located at the 12 o'clock position. While at this position you should be able to move the basket up and down. Now rotate the basket 120 deg so that the next 'indent' is positioned at the 12 o'clock position. The basket will now be more centered in the opening, and you will not be able to move the basket up and down. You have just identified which of the three bracket arms have been broken.

Call Whirlpool warranty service (1-800-253-1301) and tell them about the problem with the basket: believe it or not the basket has a life-time warranty. The shaft support is not available as a seperate item. The basket p/n is 8182232.

I was able to get Whirlpool to send me a replacement basket, but they would not do the same for the front-half of the plastic tub, which was damaged by the basket hitting the front lip, even though the warranty states that the plastic tub is warranteed for ten years. They did however agree to sell me one for 50% off the std cost. The p/n is 285982.

If your washer was purchased less than 5 years ago, best to work with your local Whirlpool authorized service agent to get the machine repaired. My machine is over 5 years old (GHW9100LW1), and I am repairing the machine myself.

I would be interested in hearing how you make out in getting your washer repaired.

Regards,
Bill in Ma.

I have a maytag top load washer (Bravos quiet series 300) that has stoped working. it flashes a code of "F51". It did this before and the repair man opened it up and found small clothing items...

Press 2 metal tabs. About 6" from the sides on the front of washer. Plastic ring on top has tabs that need to be disengaged to disconnect the ring. Once ring has been removed the area between the plastic tub & metal tub is accessible. Check for small articles of clothing, like socks or underwear. Inner tub can be removed by: snap up plastic cap (small slot for tool to slip in and pop up). Remove 7/16 nut and remove agitator (may require to be rocked back & forth, sits on a splined shaft). Remove 5 small phillips screws, being careful not to drop any, and pull inner metal tub up (may require it being shimmied back and forth). Removing this tub will give full access to any debris or articles of clothing that may be under it. Please keep in mind that if you're challenged in reassembly

Kenmore Calypso washer, has debrise and clothing

1. UNPLUG THE WASHER.

2. Open the washer top. Look along the front seam of the washer where the top meets the front. There are a couple of retaining clips (about 2" in from each side) that you will need to push in on with a putty knife while gently lifting up on the top to get the top to release. Carefully open the top and lay it back in a resting position. Make sure you support the lid so it doesn't fall open when you tilt the top back. NOTE: I would recommend using duct tape to keep the lid closed and gently place the top against a wall for support. Use a towel between the cabinet and wall to prevent any damage to painted surfaces. This also reduces the strain on the top panel supports.

3. Remove the tub ring. This is the plastic donut shaped ring that sits on top of the wash tub. There will be a tab on either side of the outer tub near the back that you can use a screwdriver to release the tub ring. The ring is filled with fluid and is used to balance the tub. So, if you hear liquid sloshing around, this is normal.

4. Remove the wash plate center dome from the wash plate. This is the center cone on top of the wash plate. Use a flat blade screwdriver and insert it into any of the slots available along the sides. Gently pry until it pops off. I say "gently", but you may have to use a little muscle to get it to come off. Sometimes they stick. Once the center cone is removed there will be a series of nuts under it.

5. Remove the nuts and the main wash plate should lift out, exposing the inner wash plate. This is another cone shaped device located under the main wash plate. Remove the inner wash plate, using care not to damage the gasket under it. It is common for clothing to become tangled in the leveler or u-joint under this inner wash plate.

6. When all required maintenance is complete, reinstall the inner wash plate, ensuring the gasket is seated under it. The inner wash plate is keyed and should only install one way.

7. Insert the main wash plate and insert mounting bolts. Use a criss-cross pattern when tightening to ensure all bolts are tightened evenly and the gasket seats properly.

8. Reinstall the center dome on the wash plate by snapping it back in place.

9. Reinstall, the balance ring on the wash tub.

The following is a parts list of the most common items that may require replacement when you experience erratic motion of the wash plate, and/or clothing becoming damaged or entangled:

Wash Plate Dome
Main (Outer) Wash Plate
Inner Wash Plate
Leveler Assembly
Inner Wash Plate Seal
U-joint

My washer agitator spins but the tub doesn't,also see metal insid

Repair or replace is always a judgement call. Most people will be better off replacing the machine. This is a rather big job, labor wise. On a difficulty scale of 1 -10, I'd give it an 8. The metal is the inner area between the inner drum and the transmission shaft, which has corroded and started to break apart. (located under the agitator) To repair, the agitator is removed, the washer front and top are removed to allow the washer's outer tub cover to be removed. This allows the inner tub to be removed. (caution: the big nut under the agitator drive spline is a left hand thread) Then, the drain hose, water level hose, suspension rods, and electrical to the motor are all removed to allow the entire drum to be removed from the washer to allow the inner tub to be removed. The actual metal part which needs to be replaced is then easy to replace by removing a few torx head screws from the underside of the inner tub.

Whirlpool Super Capacity Plus washer drum removal

What kind of residue? Grease? Sometimes a buildup of fabric softener will look like grease. If so, removing the agitator and inspecting it will show a buildup of fabric softener on underside. Rinse with hot water to remove. If you need to remove the inner drum, you will need a special tool for that. Try a local appliance parts business. They might loan or rent one, or sell you one. No filter to clean though. Grease should not be present as there is only the shaft of the transmission coming through a seal into the outer tub. Not likely to have grease migrate into tub. Fabric softener will be present on outer tub as well. Remove with hot water and plastic dish scrubber. Rinse and re-assemble washer.

I am trying to clean out all the gunk that has built up between the inner and outer tub on my trusty Kenmore 60 series washer. I have removed the agitator and tried to life the inner tub out to no avail. ...

there is a special nut called a spanner nut. it is about 1 1/2 inches and needs special tool to remove it to get the inner tub out of the unit. you might be able to remove it with a pipe wrench and then you can get access to the outer tub.
i would recommend just using a washer cleaner and trying that first.
these chemical cleaners are designed to remove residues and are much easier then taking the unit apart.

Lint filter

Hi Bob... You probably have a buildup of crud in the outer tub itself, or perhaps someone washed a rug and the backin has come off and is all in the outer tub and little by litter it is cloggin up the water pump. I would suggest that you pull the inner basket out of the machine and do a good cleaning of the machine. It's rather easy to remove that inner basket- you only need a phillips screw driver!
1. Pop out the two plastic white caps near the front/top (under the washer lid but on the top of the washer) and remove each screw.
2. Remove the agitator by popping the fabric softener cap out and simply reaching down in the center and unscrewing the white plastic "tee" nut that secures it to the agitator shaft and lift the agitator up and out.
3. Lift the machine's top up (it lifts up just like the lid does)
4. Unsnap the "tub collar" from the washer tub, (requires no tools!)
5. Grab ahold of that entire inner basket and lift it right up and out of the machine. (you may want a helper to hold the machine top back for you)

Now with that basket out, you can see what you need to do as far as any kind of build-up. You can wipe clean the inner plastic tub and remove any lint/rug backing/crud you see, and you can take that basket and clean it up in a laundry tub, of it is warmer where you live, take it outside and spray it down with a garden hose. The underside is probably going to filthy. The outer side of the inner tub is almost like a cheese grater, it might have some lint snagged in the holes. Just spray it down and clean everything up. Put it back together and you're good to go again.
It takes me about 10 minutes tops to pull the inner basket. Fisher Paykel's are very easy to work on.

I know it has a self cleaning filter, but.......

not a true filter on machine ..if you have odor issue try filling tub ith hot water pour in 2 cups chlorine bleach allow to mix and then let set approx 30-45 min aloow to finish cycle this will also help clean any residue from outer plastic tub that may be coming back off onto clothes by the way what passes for a filter may be 4 small washers under agitator or at best a plastic piece with lots of teeth under inner basket on bottom good luck

Kenmore top loading washer model 110-9259220 90 series has a very slow leak

Once you have the console open and the cabinet removed, take off your tub ring (the white plastic cover over basket) and you agitator. Unfortuneately, you're right there is a special tool for removing the 4 notched nut. I would check with my local appliance part store or order it from the manufactures web site. I belive they call it a spanner wrench. After that, your basket will lift out.

I have a Duet washer with a severe odor problem. We keep the door open when it is not in use. We have tried the Affresh tablets with no success. I am currently running a bleach cycle weekly, and it only...

The Duet has a filter trap that's pretty easy to clean. There could be debris catching residue and not allowing the washer to drain right. Remove the toe panel with a torx bit and turn the filter handlt to the left. Have towels handy because there is always a gallon or two of water left in washers after they drain! Cleaning the filter trap should be regarded as regular preventive maintenance.

Leaving the door open will actually make the problem worse because it dries out the odor-causing residue and makes it much harder to remove. If your washer stinks with the door open or shut it's time for a good cleaning before it gets worse! The area of heaviest buildup is always between the inner stainless tub and the outer plastic tub. After your washer has been cleaned you'll need to change your washing habits so odor doesn't return. If this doesn't remove bad odor you'll need a good washer cleaner.
