Electrical burnt smell

Got into the truck to start it and when I turned the key, I heard a click noise. Tried it 3 more times and the same click noise. I have power on the dash and headlights. I held the key in the start position for 5 seconds then heard what sounded like a fuse blowing then smelled an electrical smell. what could have burnt? checked fuses and seem ok. could it be the ignition switch? starter relay? Any ideas? thank you

Could be the starter motor burnt out. it does click this is to engage the motor arm to contact the flywheel to start engine. they have been known to catch fire when they have a fault as they use full power from the battery. when this happens it can damage the battery.

If you had a short in the starter motor windings and held the key, you'd get a click and a burning smell. That would be the insulation burning off the electrical windings. There's a 40-amp max fuse in this circuit.

SOURCE: headlights flicker all the time

Hi, my name is ricky and im 24 yrs old and from Bronx, N.Y . I bought my 03 impala in 04 and i had the same problem in 2007 in which that clicking noise happens. The headlights flicker, and even the gauges inside the car would flicker at times. It has nothing to do with fuses or a relay, please dont spend money on that b.s. like i did..lol I will try my best to explain what i did so that you can save some money and time. READ EVERYTHING AND USE ADVICE AT YOUR OWN RISK.
1st of all - I went to a junk yard/auto salvage yard to find a USED part that i needed. Often there are good parts from cars that have been totalled.
2nd- What i asked for was a Body Control Module. This controls most of the electric issues you are having and costed me about 50 dollars compared to a new one that was over $200 and reached up to $500.
3rd- I went head first under the steering column and found where the BCM was located. Poke around to find it cause it is def. there, hidden well. It doesnt take special skill to remove it or find it.
4th-Replace the BCM, but be advised that after you do this, your car might not crank over.My car did crank over because i installed a automatic starter previously so i could have started it with the remote start.
5th- you MUST take the car to a chevy shop so they can Program your car to the body control module this costed me about $250.
All together this information has to help you in someway.
If you have further questions or would like to make a comment, then e-mail me at " [email protected] "
I hope this helps...im not saying it is a 100 percent guarantee for you, but i had this same problem recently and this was the answer to my problem. By the way, never buy a american car again or a GM product for that matter...Kudos

SOURCE: 2003 Chevy S10 won't start

Are you sure its the starter? did you try it in neutral? could be park neutral switch, or ignition switch, or if its a standard shift maybe it has a switch on clutch that it has to be depressed to start and its bad. As far as jump starting you cross the maine or big post on starter to small or little post on starter to do that, on a v6 starter it on the right side under exhaust manafold, and i think its on the same side on a 4 cyl.

SOURCE: Purple solenoid wire shorted, no pwr coming from ign switch

SOURCE: When the ignition key is turned a clicking noise is heard.

Sounds like a bad ground. If the battery voltage does not drop when the starter is engaged, the starter is not getting the juice. Check the ground connection again. 90%

Won't turn over at all

I would be checking for the main lead to the battery /starter to ensure that it has not burnt though on the exhaust or has not worn through and been shorting out. The clicking noise would ne the solenoid moving but the current is not getting to the starter. Check the condition of the battery. Shorting of the cable will take the current away from the electrics so the engine would stop. The battery will have to be load tested to ensure that it has not been damaged.

Low humming noise and burnt plastic smell coming from 1990 acura integra

Jennifer what type of timing belt does your engine use ?
Is it Nylon ? When was the last time you had it changed ?
Burning plastic smell may be being caused by the timing belt bearing runners seizing and the belt is getting hot .
If the belt is due to snap you could cause a lot of damage to the engine if it breaks.
Might be worth getting a mechanics advice on this as a possible cause

Wont start

the clicking noise is usually 2 things, step on try jump starting car and if starts have battery tested as it is probably bad (free testing at most chain auto stores), the other usual problem is that the starter has gone bad, when whoever tried turning off car while driving might have put into start mode and burnt out the starter when it engaged at high speed.

Liftgate wont open, have to use the key, but if I press the key to close the rear lift gate it will close it.

can you hear the latch release when you try to open? if no clicking noise is heard then most likely a bad latch assembly. also check the rear door control module to see if smells burnt, if it does it won't send open signal. the module is located behind the plastic shroud on the left of the rear hatch.

1991 cadillac eldorado, car wont turn over and makes clicking noises. How do I know if its the starter or a specific part on the starter going out? When you turn the key the headlights and dash lights,...

1st make sure your connections at battery and starter are clean and tight. Next pull the battery out and have a parts store check it's condition. Even though the lights and radio work, it may be too weak to crank the engine over. If the battery checks out ok, then you are probably correct, it's the starter. Check in this order though, so you don't waste $ on parts you don't need. You don't want to pull the starter out to find it was a weak battery, or a bad connection (dirty or loose connection would prevent jump start from working.)

Not starting replaced alt, starter, solenoid, and battery is good

It sounds like the wires from the battery to the starter solinoid are burned out, possibly even more of them to the main fuse box under the hood. You will have to start looking for the burned wires you can already smell and replace them. Starter and Battery area are a good place to start.

Electrical Problems

Do not leave the car in the garage without the battery disconnected until you locate the source of the smoke, the best tool to find the smoke's source is your nose, smell the area around the source of the smoke, if you smell a really nauseating smell you found it, then look for signs of burnt wires or burnt components, also look for any oil that may have caused the smoke, but I doubt that was the source, this sounds electrical. I know of no problems for your car that would cause this, so most likely it is not a common problem.
