No this is not happening when I'm not accelerating but it does stop when I take my foot off the gas. The van had the torque converter replaced through a recall about a year ago. If I remeber correctly it also has a new alternator. I've even had the tie rod ends replaced recently. Thank you for the suggestions I'll have to start looking and working on it as soon as the weather warms up.

Sounds like a half shaft. Reach around behind each wheel and see if there is play in the shaft that leads from the wheel to the transmission. There should be no play. Other possibility is a bearing hub. Jack up car, grab the tire at 9 and 3 o'clock. Shake wheel if there is movement not from the tie rod then it is the bearing hub.

SOURCE: intermittent rumbling sound in transmission

Do you have the problem when you turn on the car as well? I had this same problem, turns out the alternator was going bad. A few months later the alternator went. After the alternator was replaced, the problem went away.

You need to have all the suspension components checked for excessive wear. Also check the wheel bearing for noise.

1999 Lexus RX300 left rear wheel has a rumbling noise sounds like cv joint or bearing its all wheel drive.

Spin that wheel by hand as fast as you can. If you can hear the noise coming from right behind the tire it's probably a wheel bearing.

2001 Sebring LXI convertable. Loud rumbling noise that increases as accelerating increases. Sounds like a rumble strip on the highway. I changed the tires with no change in the noise.

Bad hub bearing. Drive the car on a straght EMPTY road .@30 mph or when noise is audible, **** the wheel left than right (similar to a race car warming. tires) and listen if there is a change in the sound if so its a front bearing if not it should be a rear bearing .Jack the rear of the vehicle up and spin the tire holding onto the strut. Feel and listen for a vibration or noise. This should pinpoint that elusive noise.Let me know Good hunting
