Make sure the kb turned on
make sure you got a good connection
make sure plus or usb connectors are clean
if you have ir or rf device make the rf box plugged in
than check the batteries in both devices
than push the button on the rf connector and keyboard at the same time and restart the computer.
than push rf connector the mouse button at the same time and restart the system again.
if the keyboard still not working try a different keyboard if bother keyboards do the same thing
turn off computer when you restart the computer push F11
go into cmos check keyboard turned on
F10 save and exit reboot.

How easy is it to replace a palmrest on a Sony Vaio VGN NW series laptop?

The Sony laptops can be quite tricky to work on, I would suggest having someone that is trained replace it because there is a good chance of breaking something while stripping the unit down.

Anyone know how to get to the hard drive in an old Sony PCG-F309?

LOL, the hard drive is probably located under the Keyboard or the palmrest. Sony was known for putting it under the keyboard or palmrest on older models.

Remove and inspect non working keyboard VGN-T37GP

Sony makes getting a keyboard off it laptop like trying to launch a shuttle craft. Take the three screws out on the bottom, Push in the two detent tabs at the top of the keyboard, the hold it in place when on the palmrest. They are located at F5 and Num Lock keys. Now take a thin skewer or wire and push through where the screws were, this will release the keyboard. Now slide the keyboard toward the screen and that releases the lower detents that hold it at the lower part of the palmrest....nor unplug the cable and you are good to go. Oh, by the way below is the link to the service manual for your laptop....it has it fully illustrated.....

The hinges for the screen on my Sony TR1MP have

Unfortunately hinges are not repairable, so:

Buy hinges from here and replace them.

Unfortunately i can't find any service manual for TR1MP, so you should sort it out how to do it.

I just can say that you will need to remove palmrest, screen bezel, lcd screen to get access to hinges.
