The screen is just defective. There is 2 components in LCD screen.
1. the LCD
2, The back light witch is like a big neon that makes the screen bright.

In your case the LCD works since you can see the screen if you get close enough, but the back light is dead.
You can fix this by basically replacing the screen.

How do I change the desktop text, icons and bars back to 100% from 500% in Windows 8.1?

Hi Cindy

You have set a customer DPI scale for your display.

Right Click on desktop
Choose "Screen Resolution"
Click on link that says "Make Text and other items larger or smaller"
Click on link that says "Set custom text size (DPI)"
Adjust the scale back to 100%
Apply the changes and all should be well.

Regards
Andrew

Vizio lcd flatpanel tv with dark background

If half screen is affected it will be either a board (LCD and Plasma have different names) but in those one board drives each side of the screen unit--worst case is the display panel itself which is fatal from a cost point of view.

Inspiron 6400 powers up but screen basically dark and barely able to see the desktop. using the FN key and the up arrow does not change the contrast. any thoughts?

Your backlight bulb went out, it's a long tube on the bottom typically, It's most likely taped to the LCD frame and encassed in a metal shield. Not for the faint of heart taking on the repair. Light fixtures are found on eBay however, or new LCDs of course

Dim screen

If its very dark and you can barely see anything its probably a bad back-light. I'd suggest to take it to your local Best Buy. And yes, they can look up PSP#'s with your credit card, but even easier by telephone number.

Screen goes dark

Fading typically is related to power supply heating or connection opening on the digital drive. You might try fan into vents just to prove this, or plug in outside in the cold, and see how long it is on in test mode.
