Memory sticks "MEMORY STICK ERROR" for SONY DSC-S30/S50
I'm trying to find out what memory stick is needed for a DSC-S30. I purchased one today and it did not work. If there is any way you can help me it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Bill We just got a hand-me-down camera (DCS-S30/S50) and are having trouble with the memory stick. We are using a Memory Stick Duo Adaptor with a 2G PRO Duo Memory Stick, but when it's inserted, the LCD shows "MEMORY STICK ERROR".
Any thoughts on how to fix this problem?
Re: memory sticks "MEMORY STICK ERROR" for SONY...

I'm sorry you're experiencing difficulty with transferring images from the Camera to the Computer. I have provided a link you can view the steps to transfer images:
http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/documentLink.do?externalId=C170591
The Camera may not be compatible with newer Operating Systems. In that case, you can remove the Memory Stick from the Camera and insert in to the Memory Stick slot on the Computer to transfer the images.
If your computer does not have the memory stick slot, you may purchase one as it does not cost much..
Thanks for understanding.
A letter and number error code of C:13:xx
is an indication the recording media (floppy disk or Memory Stick®
media) you are using is either not supported for use with the camera,
not formatted properly, or is damaged or faulty.

Try searching through the menu options on the camera with the card in, and look for the "format memory card" option. This may help. Also you can try to use your computer to format the card as well. Hope this helped.
I had the same problem... just switch on the cam with the memory card in it. Then go to menu, and in that find the FORMAT option and format the card. That's it.... ur cam should work fine now! Let me know if it was successful!
Without being accusatory, it is likely that something bad happened to the camera (a drop, and accidental liquid spill, etc.). But the bottom line is that it sounds like you did all the proper things, and I'm sure you tried a full charge of the camera's battery. The good news is that a quick check of Amazon shows this camera to be fairly easy and cheap to replace at this point. Its listed as a 1.2 Megapixel camera which by today's standards is low enough in resolution, that you probably can replace it for about $20. Sony may be willing to service it, but I'll bet replacing it will be cheaper. Sorry to be a bearer of less than good news.
The problem is compatibility - or lack thereof. The older Sony cameras such as DSC-S50 (I have one), which used the original version of the Sony Memory Stick, can't read the new Memory Stick Pro - even with the "Duo" adapter.
I don't know all the specifics but it has to do with how the memory chip interfaces w/ the camera, how the data is transferred -- newer models of chips/cameras use a different, faster method for data transfer which the older cameras/devices can't do. Similar to "serial" vs. "USB" vs. "USB-2" issues with older computers.
So, sorry to say, but if you have a DSC-S50 camera like I do or similar older model, you're stuck w/ the standard Memory Sticks - which I have just discovered are very hard to find any more. I just finished a sweep of all major electronic stores/outlets in my area (silicon valley - where there's plenty of them), plus many web sites. And all you can find new, now, are the Pro/Duo chips, 1GB & up.
