Question about Acer Aspire 5100-3357 Notebook

Laptop computer lagging horribly

acer aspire 5100-3357 laptop running windows vista premium is lagging horribly from reboot.

The computer reboots and loads up relativly easily. Once running the cpu usage in taskmanager shoots up to 100% then lags, during lag cannot open any programs and can last for 1+ minutes then can get a moment but only briefly when the laptop doesnt lag. If i pull up yahoo messenger and run webcam, it lags out really bad and cannot do anything for several mins. I have uninstalled various programs, changed what loads up during boot up, cleaned registory, uninstalled norton anti virus (was told this uses up alot of resources) and the problem still persists..... help!!!

    thanks for the responce, i have checked with task manager and there apears to be nothing showing the cpu usage at 90% or over, all the things running are prety much steady at around 2-8%. am tearing my hair out trying to figure this out with nothing working to fix the problem ; ;

  • jipesape Oct 23, 2007

the only process that is above the 70% cpu usage is system idol process, there is anouther one called audiodg.exe which is 17-23% CPU usage, there is a process called system that is at 25%. The program keeps highlighting Yahoo messenger in green or red and sometimes it shows two yahoo messengers one in red and other in green, then can dissapear so it is not listed then reappear. When the computer lags it can show several yahoo messengers in the taskbar as if thats how many is open then when it unlags they all dissapear into one as normal.

  • jipesape Oct 23, 2007

    looking again when my computer lagged out, the audiodg.exe hit 60+ %, SLsvc.exe hit 53% at times, i am no computer whizz and dont know what these processes actually are, i really want to hit my head off a brick wall ; ;

okay, i really appreciate this help thank you. I have uninstalled yahoo and the lagging problem still persists, i am not aware of having adaware or spyware problems, i think norton 360 scans for that, but not sure. i installed msn messenger and still have that same problem with lag. When the programs are not running, the lag is still there but not as bad. Am so sorry if the information i am giving isnt much use.

just uninstalled webcam drivers and used windows vista to install its drivers and the laptop doesnt seem as bad. It still lags but very briefly, could that have caused this problem?. Am not sure because i dont really know exactly how a driver works.

  • jipesape Oct 24, 2007

it has 1024 memory. i was told to try uninstalling norton antivirus because it uses up alot of resources and vista is the same. I uninstalled norton and the problem was still there, until i uninstalled the webcam driver software and let windows use its own and here is a vast improvement.

You have something running in the background that is eating up the CPU useage. You need to identify which process is doing this.

Use the built in task manager, using ctrl-alt-delete to bring it up, and see which process is at above 90% cpu usage. Then post back here what you find.

Go here, may need to copy and paste -

This is a more elaborate task manager from microsoft. Use this to check what is running and see if you happen to see anything then and then post back here. I have one other option if you find nothing with this.

Possibly realted to yahoo msgr. Try uninstalling that and see if your system runs normally. The green means the software is loading and running, the red means the software has stopped and is unloadingl. Not sure why yahoo msgr would be loading and unloading istelf repeatedly.

Audiodg.exe is a Windows Vista default audio service. Comes with Vista.

System is another default Vista service.

I think I would start with Yahoo Msgr and go from there.

Are you familiar with MSCONFIG? You can click on start, in the search box type in RUN and hit enter. Then type in MSCONFIG and hit enter. You'll get a window with several tabs on it. Click on the startup tab. That will show you all of the programs loading after windows loads. Uncheck the yahoo related stuff, shold be easier to figure out which ones are for yahoo as the "location" of the program will have yahoo in it. If you uncheck anything, and click apply, this means that program will not load the next time windows loads. After any changes you make, always restart the system to see if your problem went away.

Sounds to me like you have a third party program, such as yahoo, dragging your system down. My ony other thought would be maybe a hard drive problem or possibly a bug of some sort (virus, spyware or adware). Have you had any problems with adware that you are aware of?

Let me know if removing yahoo worked.

i think the next step is going to be to check out the hard drive.

Go to this link, about mid page there is a download button. This is a hard drive diagnostic tool from western digital. Works on other models as well, or used to anyway, unless they have updated the program lately.

    Anyway, here's the link -

Download and install, and the run it from the start menu. DO NOT WRITE ZEROS TO THE DRIVE. :-) It will list your hard drive, with either a green checkmark or a red x. Double click your drive listed and choose EXTENDED TEST. I don't think the software has changed since I last used it. May take a couple hours to complete. Least we'll know if you hard drive is ok and that will rule out a read/write problem.

I just thought of something else.

How much memory does this laptop have in it?? 256? 512? Or more?

K, yea that should be plenty of memory. Least you found what might be the culprit. And yea, Norton is a resource hog. AVG from is a decent anti-virus software. Less taxing on the computer. They have a free scaled down version as well.

Try to download driver from Official Acer site here. Choose your laptop model. Then choose Operating System. In the list below scroll down and click on arrow next to CardReader. After downloading driver install it. Reboot laptop. If that won't help then I suggest re-install Operating System.

How can i reboot my acer laptop

Press Start(ORB at bottom left for vista/w7) and if you're on windows 7/vista, there should be a list button on the bottom right side of the start menu saying "Shutdown"(windows 7) and "Sleep"(Vista), click the list and click Reboot.

On XP you need to click the Shutdown button and before you click shutdown instead click Reboot(Green button If i recall correctly).

You can use a torrent site like isoHUNT, to download a copy of the Acer OEM vista disc, this is a little illegal, but if you use your own Windows key from your COA sticker, it should register and activate ok.
You may have to download your drivers seperatly from from ACER.
You will need a torrent client like UTorrent, and the download could take a day or so

Acer factory backup does not start my computer

I have the exact same laptop as you. I've had this problem before. I bought the DVD's from Acer to reinstall everything and there are times when they don't work. I left it sit for a week and it stayed on the same screen. I would just keep trying, or order the DVD's from Acer. It will cost about $30 but might be your only chance.
I don't know if this is a flaw of this computer or not, but even with a different HDD in it it does the same.

Can someone tell me how to reboot my Acer Aspire 5050?

"Can someone tell me how to reboot my Acer Aspire..."
"I use Windows Vista".

Right! Thankyou for providing more information than most users do here, but in this case, Windows Vista will look and run the same on any computer. =-D

Click on the start-menu button (it's the Windows logo at the bottom-left of your screen)

Then aim for an icon that is red, with a white circle and a line in it. Click that, and then you'll be prompted for restart, shutdown, take over the world etc.

Done! =-]
