Just re installed windows xp on new hard drive, built-in speakers no longer functioning

I recently bought a Dell Latitude D600 over the internet. When I got the computer, the sound and everything worked fine. the 40 GB hard drive was no longer sufficient for what I was doing, so I upgraded to a 160 GB hard drive. I installed windows XP, and everything worked out great...............That is, until I tried to play a sound file.

When I check sound options, it says I don't have any audio installed.
The computer still has its original built-in speakers, and I can't figure out how to get them to work again. Any help would be much appreciated. THANKS!!!!

It may be the drivers, correct
goto system in control panel
check under multimedia or sounds etc...
you can troubleshoot from there as well

Visit support.dell.com, click on drivers and downloads, and then click on the service tag option.... enter the service tag from the bottom side of the laptop... it will then display the list of drivers for that laptop.

Download and install the audio drivers and any other ones that you need.... let me know if that solves it for you. Make sure they are for your laptop model and operating system.

I cannot get sound from my internal speakers on dell d600 latitude. Headphones work and sound comes out of internal speakers briefly when pulling jack plug out? So I know they work but just cannot get...

This sounds like a defective audio port. In normal operation, plugging in a headphone plug breaks the connection to the speakers. On your laptop, when you pull out the plug it makes a connection, but only briefly. Unfortunately the audio port is built into the system board. I don't think you will find a software fix for this problem. Your best bet is to get a USB sound device for external speakers.

Sound randomly cuts out

I have seen this issue before.
You could attempt to disable Audio Hardware Acceleration.

This can be found in the Sounds and Audio Devices under Performance (XP Advanced Button under Speaker settings > Performance.)
