Question about JVC GR-D290 Mini DV Digital Camcorder

1 Answer

When in video recording mode LCD screen and viewfinder are black when the lens cap is off.

Haven't used my GR D290 in a long time. Charged it up and everything appears to work except recording mode. The lens cap is OFF but no images appear on either the LCD screen or through the viewfinder. The lens is clean and there are no obstructions.

It could one of a few problems:

1. The viewfinder is pulled out and "PRIORITY" is set to "FINDER".

Push the viewfinder back in or set "PRIORITY" to "LCD".

2. The LCD monitor's brightness setting is too dark.

Adjust the brightness of the LCD monitor.

3. If the monitor is tilted upward 180 degrees, open the monitor fully.

SOURCE: lens cap?

I just had this problem and was going to replace the camcorder. My husband took the lens cap off, placed the camera in the sun for about an hour then flicked (not banged or beat - just a light tapping) and now its working. He said condensation, dust, lack of use, etc may have made the lense stick. Good luck!

CCD (imaging chip) went bad and require replacement. Not a very expensive repair, but has to be done by professional.

This is usually caused by a defective CCD image sensor and can be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired qualified service technician.

Open and close it a few times. Maybe tap the side a little bit as the lens cap switch may be sticking.

Assuming you don't see any video through the viewfinder, it could be that the CCD has died on that camcorder. It happens, though not frequently.

If the video though the viewfinder is clear, there might be some sensor on the lens ring to indicate a lens cap, or an automatic lens cap not properly disengaging when put in record mode.
