You need to pull out the White Reflector Sheet out then push it fully in.

I broke a lens once and just went and bought a New / Used Bounce Flash that had a uneversal flash-boot. most cameras have a flash plug in to acommidate Auto Flash Modes. If You Know how to test Cameras and Adjustable 'Bounce" flashes like yours PAWN SHOPS are a PARADISE.

I know you probably have already fixed the problem, but in case you didn't, or just to help others with the same problem:
This morning I connected my 550 EX to my camera and had the same issue with the info on the LCD flashing incessantly. Turned out to be the diffuser on top of the flash head, the one you pull out, then down over the flash to soften the light. If the diffuser is pulled out even two millimeters from its resting position, the LCD won't stop flashing! Just push it back in, and voila!
hope this can be of help

550 ex zoom stuck on manual

Hi Liz,

Because this thread is more than a year old, I sincerely hope you figured out the solution to the zoom problem with your flash. I was having the same issue with the 550ex and found the simple solution on a forum about Canon Flash Photography.

Make sure that your diffuser panel (wide panel) is off and securely seated in the top of the flash unit. When the wide panel is in the down position, it forces the flash into manual mode at the widest setting.

Hopefully this little tip will come in handy for someone out there reading this thread.

Good luck!

Can I use the Canon Speelite 550EX TTL with a Nikon D3

No. the Nikon and Canon flahses and camera speak different "languages" in TTL. So while the flash may fire once in a while, the TTL (Through The Lens flash metering) will not be compatible and the exposures will almost never correspond and synch up. Get a Nikon SB-900 flash.
