Question about IBM ThinkPad T20 2647 Notebook

IBM Thinkpad T20 - Model Type 264784U

Running smoothly w/o a problem. Moved recently and placed it on its side for about 3 weeks w/o using it, however I had it plugged in to keep it running.

Tried to take it out of the screen saver mode and the hard drive was making noise that it never made before.

Goes through the boot process - never makes it to windows - give an I/O error of   00000400.

What is my next logical step?

Don't want to spend a great deal of money on it. If it needs a new HD I will consider - what type of hard drive can it support?

In case this info is useful  System S/N 78PLL99

    Thanks for the info

Yes it has a 20 gb original drive in it.

In order to save time searching for the site you mentioned, would you mind providing?

Also, if I have to eventually replace the drive - is it something that is intuitive?

Will I be able to replace it myself?

Should I assume that a 60 - 80gb drive will fit into the HD slot?

I am ready to replace the hard drive in the ThinkPad described previously

I will replaced it with an IDE HD

Question: Can I then install Windows XP on this machine? And I guess I should add some RAM

Yes ssco1774 you may install up to a 120 Gig hard drive. Yes you may then install windows XP. XP will run if you have 128 meg of ram installed, but it runs better with 256 meg, or if you want to spend the money, 512 meg

I own 3 thinkpad T-20's, model 2647's. All of them originally came with 12 gb drives. In one of them I installed a 60gb Hitachi 5400 rpm drive, and in another one I just this past week installed a 120gb WD 5400 rpm drive. The 60gb drive and the 120 gb drive both detected properly and both are dual boot with windows 2000 and Mandriva Linux. Yes, you may install atleast up to a 120 gb hard drive in your T20 thinkpad with no problem. My 3rd T20 has a problem that I need help with. When I turn it on, the hard drive led flashes green then immediately goes off, as if a breaker is tripping. Since I have several of the same model laptops, I have swapped parts around with the ones that work to eliminated the battery, charger, and the on/off switch and keyboard assembly as possible causes. What else could be causing the problem ?

I wasn't aware that these thinkpads t20 can support 60gig+ hard drives. Has anyone got a thinkpad t20 out there in which they have installed a 60gig hard drive?

I would say the hard drive is failing. But need to run a diagnostic on it to be sure.

If you would like to know where to get the ibm / hitachi hard drive diagostic let me know. It's free for download and you can get a bootable ISO image to burn onto cd. Allowing you to boot from cd in order to test the drive.

As far as replacing, you should be good with a 60gb or 80gb. Did it orginally have a 20gb in it? I would say for most people, 60-80 is way more than enough. Unless you have a ton of music or pictures.

The physical size is pretty standard. And yes, you should be able to easily install a new hard drive. Question is, are you wanting to attempt a recovery of your old data?? To do that you would need to send it out to someone who could do this for you. Otherwise, you could just install the new drive and reinstall your operating system or restore cd's if you have them.

You can download the bootable cd image from

Just need to burn it to cd, I hope you have the ability to burn an ISO image. If you use Nero, shouldn't be a problem. Just load Nero and choose the burn image option. Any other software for burning cd's should support burning this iso image. Don't just copy the ISO to the cd, it needs to be loaded as a cd image in your burning software. Then you can boot your laptop from this cd, which may require changing the boot order in the bios settings if its not allready set to boot from cd first. And the menu is simple to follow. Run the advanced test and see what it returns with.

Oh, and as far as replacing a hard drive goes.... you will need an IDE drive... don't buy a SATA drive. ;-)

Just a few screws that holds it in.

IBM Thinkpad T20 Type 2647

I currently own 3 Thinkpad T-20 Laptops. They all have a 700 mhz processor in them, and so will yours, more than enough to run windows xp, in fact, I am running Windows XP Profession on one of them. The PC100 is the type of memory it uses, not the processor speed. i recently installed a 120 gb drive in one of them so you will have no problem installing a 20 or 40 gb drive, or larger.
