Am not an expert in this area. I have a different laptop. I swapped my HDD with ssd.
U just have to open up ur laptop.
Basically ssd can be mounted in three ways. Depends on how ur laptop hardware is arranged and what kind of ssd you install.
U can either mount ssd instead of current HDD, or swap ur optical drive with an ssd or even swap ur WiFi Bluetooth card with ssd. First open up ur laptop. Plenty of videos are available in YouTube, on how to dismantle it. Then choose what type of ssd and simply install it. All the best.
OS is dead right, or did you run the file system check by hand.

if smart tests fail on HDD it is a bad drive.
but has no HDD at all only this relic dinky 20GB SSD, the ssd can be bad easy after 11 years of use. I bet it is.

There can be a sensor inside the case, that is "tripped" whenver the side-panel of the case is opened, i.e., somebody has removed the side-panel, in order to remove some components, e.g., RAM, or add-in adapter card. So, if it was a "thief" (an "intruder") that opened the case, to expose the "insides", check that nothing was stolen. But, if it was you that opened the case, then enter BIOS SETUP, and "clear" that "chassis intrusion" status.

It does sound like there's a major problem with the Solid State Drive. When you boot the system, press F1 or F2 (or what is shown) to get into the setup. When in, do you see the drive in question showing on any of the screens? You may need to open the system up and reseat the SSD. If reseating it doesn't help, you may be eligible for a replacement SSD from it's manufacturer. Many Solid State devices have a lifetime warranty.
I hope this helps. Post a reply if it doesn't or if you need further help.
You need to check the chassis intrusion pin setting located on the motherboard. See page 1-30 (Number 11) in your manual.
You need to add a jumper as shown.
The system should no longer halt.
