Question about Acer TravelMate 290 Notebook

Nothing happens A while ago my Acer Travelmate 290 just stopped working after it took a slight knock. When I try to boot it up, the hard drive light flashes for a second as do the battery light etc, but then it does nothing and switches back off. I thought maybe the memory could have been dislodged however have reseated the memory. have listened as it attempts to start up and there seems to be no whirring sound of fan or hard drive. What could have been dislodged and how can I rectify this? Please forgive me if I sound a bit ignorant however I'm new to this.

I have the same problem.  when the power button is pushed the cpu fan spins up then shuts off.  I removed the harddrive, this should allow the computer to at least boot to a bios screen, but that is not the case.  The screen is still black it never even flickers.  CS

hey somthing similar happened to me aswell. i was using my computer until i knocked it lightly at the base (not the screen-the screen was up) and the screen was white, then i turned it off and tried to turn it back on, however the screen was black. i took it to the computer store today, and they said it wasn't a screen problem and the memory was loose. the tightened it. and i was working. however when i got home, as i was scratching a sticker off the screen, it happened all over again.

i dont know what the problem is, however i hope this mayhave helped. my computer is still trying to be fixed. however i will keep posted on the results.

Hi again, this is an update on my computer. the store told me that they could not fix my problem because they suspected that it was a problem with a fractured or loose mainboard. they said that it mayhave been a a crack from usual everyday wear and tear, or that the soldering on the mainboard has come loose. that is why my computer works somtimes then it doesn't work at all, because of the pressure i applyed to the mainboard. the knock mayhave finally moved it out of place or somthing. the only way i can fix my computer is to get the whole thing replaced or 're soldered' -IF it is a soldering problem.
it costs wayy too much to replace the main board, it is like 500 for the main board, 90 for the quote, and 300 for the actual labour. that's like 890 dollars, and thats just not worth it. you're better of buying a new computer. just recover all your work by putting your hard disk onto a external casing.

anyway that was my update. i hope it has helped you.

Depending on how big the knock was it could have been severe enough to damage your hard drive.  The boot up of the machine hence the fan is caused by the CPU heating and the fan cooling it however when the bios and CPU ask the hard drive to boot up it cannot thus that is the failure of your startingup. It may need the attention of serviceman to repair it and even he may suggest a replacement of the hard drive.

My acer Travelmate 242lc will not power on

First think , has it been dropped, jarred, banged, get the idea? Does it continue to blink, the HDD? Do you see a "ghost image" in the monitor in a bright light? Do you here sounds? You say "nothing else happens", meaning the light stops blinking? Shut down, unplug, remove battery, plug in, try to boot noemally.

I need a system recovery cd for my acer travelmate 290. when it is turned on it goes to boot menu and requires a cd to reboot the system. i think it has been wiped out. where do i get a download i can put...

Before you lose all hope of fixing it without having to purchase a fresh system from Microsoft, as the BIOS menu ends quickly press F8 and if the system is still intact you will be invited to repair your system from the hard drives recovery partition. If that doesn't work there are people selling start up disks on the internet, I haven't tried them and cannot comment.
Hope this helps.

It won't boot the hard drive, yet it still shows it is present using a boot cd. Is there any setting i should check?

Its like this, the board of the Hard Drive is working but the disk or the reader of the disk maybe not working that's why it shows on the boot cd. My suggestion is to replace the hard drive the start a new installation.

I have acer travelmate 290 while working suddenly the screen went white and the remained so i turned it off and now i try to start it power comes on but display shows nothing. tried removing HD and Drive...

I have the exact same problem with my old computer! The problem started after I switched the HDD a long time ago but I never got it (semi-)working again until a few days ago.I completely disassembled the computer and reassembled it again and I finally got something on the screen. I the tried to install win xp but when I pressed the keyboard the problem reoccurred. Therefore I'm fairly sure there is a short circuit or a bad connection somewhere probably on the underside of the motherboard close to the power supply DC-connector.

I own an acer travelmate 290, and getting no display on monitor.

First check to see if your PC has a built in factory restore, or system recovery, usually available using CTRL & F12, F10, etc. Check your manual, if you don't then, OK try this, Startup PC, press F8 at instant of turn on... choose Safe Mode. when you are asked if you want safe desktop or system restore choose restore, when you get to the restore menu, choose a date BEFORE you had problems there may only be one or two to choose from. just follow the instructions and you should be back to working with all that behind you. If that doesn't work, boot up on your Windows DVD and do a "Repair Install", If thats doesn't work do a format and a reinstall.

Hi there it's not a software problem. It is Hardware problem, Your screen can't afford the loadisit Acer service center you need to test your screen connectivity from Motherboard. May be its damaged. So don't go for format every time becouse, its not good for HDD life.
