Doesn't recognize replacement HD

Unable to FORMAT the HDD in the device? Perhaps remove the drive - hook it up to a working PC temporarily, and using a partition software program or you could burn a CD (I use PartitionWizard), delete any or all partitions on the new 160GB WD and make that drive UNALLOCATED and UNFORMATTED. Apply the actions as needed - only to that drive (this will at least allow your unit to recognize it properly). Once done, remove the drive from the PC, and put it back into your recorder - see if it recognizes it this time, then try and format it (in accordance with the type of file system the unit uses - which may differ from that of a PC). Replacement drives should be formatted to suit the unit they are intended for AFTER they are fitted, not before. Otherwise you run into compatibility problems (e.g. the drive won't allow recording/doesn't read etc., but might work in a PC). If this is the case, it may explain greyed out options and not being able to record to it. If you still have the original drive, check the jumper setting to be sure. If both old and new are set to CS - leave them as is - don't change that.

Most probably the format of your hard drive is NTFS. Samsung DVD players only recognize FAT32 formats. If you have the patience and resources try to change the format of your hard drive to FAT32. Better yet since it is a 1TB try to create a partition one NTFS and one FAT32 because FAT32 cannot go beyond 4GB for files.

Your drive is setup as ntfs it needs to be formatted to fat32 via Windows and if Windows won't let you format it to fat32 you need to use a drive partitioner program you can find several free ones on the webz

The Western Digital My Passport line, besides the Essential Series, is originally formated for a Mac (in the HFS+ format) and as such cannot be read by Windows PCs. You can either get a program to read the External such as Macdrive, or format it to NTFS or FAT32; formats that are readable by Windows. I would recommend formatting it to NTFS, because you can only transfer up to 4 Gigabyte files to FAT32, while NTFS is nearly limitless.

Did you format this drive to NTFS or FAT32. It may not rcognise it as a slave drive on a format other than NTFS

Hi,
When you buy an external drive/enclosure combination from a drive
manufacturer (Seagate, WD etc) the drive usually comes formatted as fat32.
Because you have formatted the drive in NTFS the TV will not recognize the drive it has to be formatted in fat32 for the TV to recognize it.
Because of the limitations of Windows XP, you can not format any fat32 partition larger than 32 gig. (i think this also goes for Vista too but its worth a try)

The work around is to create/format the partition by booting up into
Partition Magic from their 2 floppy set that the program allows you to
create. Then you are not bound by this restriction.
You can also get partition magic on the hirens boot CD, and partition the drive that way.

You can also partition/format the drive by booting up from a Windows 98se or a Windows ME setup floppy and use the combination of the fdisk and format commands to create one large partition and format same.

Of the two, Partition Magic is easier as you have a visual interface to see what you are doing. But both work the same.

With older M/B's you may have to remove the drive from the external
enclosure to perform the actions as the drive may not be seen while in the USB/Firewire enclosure (bios limitation). The drive will have to be
connected to an IDE/SATA cable connected to one of the IDE/SATA ports on the M/B.

I've been wrestling with tw IBM's with similar issues for the last three days, one of which wouldn't recognize the hard drive or the CD drive. I'm going to suggest flashing the bios, this worked on the ones I have. Here's a link to the bios download. I recommend that you use the one for creating a diskette. Try this and let me know.
