Used to burn cds now the cd burner component says it missing or tells me my pc can not burn cds

try using Nero dvd burner...

to tell u the reality the recovery disks is of no use as per my openion.
as they cant reload the OS in case ur machine crashes....so just have a WinOS CD from which u can reload OS again in case there is any crash,
the recovery disks do work but they wont help you in case you need to reload the OS again.
So just buy a WinOS if ur machine came with preinstalled OS
this is my experience and personal openion, the rest of the decison is left to you.

Check the Drives Device drivers are not Corrupt Or Missing.
Also uninstall then re-install your CD/DVD Writing Software.

Failing this, The drive Should be replaced, as suspected Faulty.

Could be problem with the optic, try to clean the optic
with CD cleaner first.
And if it still doesnt work, unfortunately you should replace with
another new CD Drive.

The free one with Dell does not burn CDs it only writes data..download a good free DVD burner like ImgBurn from CNET.com and save yourself some headaches.

If you are burning using software you have to tell it which device to use as a burner first. Usually there is a drop down menu of some sort for it, explore your burning software a little more. Most Drives can burn Cds these days, I'm sure it can.

burning and cd requires a cd burner... the fact that you burn cds does not necessarily mean that you can also burn dvd's.. to burn a dvd you need to have a dvd burner unit installed. check on tray that comes out on you cd/burner if it says RW DVD.. if not chances are you only have a cd burner but is not a dvd burner.

well it could be many reasons why it wont write your burner but first what software you are using for burning. it happens to me before using media player when i try to burn music. the reason was i haven't configure my media player to use my dvd burner for burning because i have dvd burner and a cd burner installed. Now maybe you try to reinstall it using your dvd driver the one which with your dvd burner when you first bought it.
