Wont play dvd's or blue rays but will play games

My console is reading games but when i put in a dvd or blueray the screen just goes blank. I have tried to bring up the menu screen with a game then eject it and put in a dvd but its not letting me access the settings etc My PS3 is loading all of my games but not any dvd's. It has "No Signal" when anything but a game is put in. Even when playing the game, you can open a menu but it asks you to quit your game first. Once I quit the game, "No Signal" comes back up.

Sounds like the lens servo my be ought , this is the small motor that ajust the lens between playing a game, movie, or blu-ray

Ok your laser is bad. You need to replace it. Your laser has a blu ray diode which lights up blue and reads ps3 games and blu ray games. Then it has a red diode which plays ps2 games dvds cds ps1 games. Your blu ray diode is burned up. You will have to replace the laser its pretty simple.

My ps3 turns on and off ok, plays movies off the hard drive and will play ps3 games but has suddenly stopped playing movies ( dvd & blu ray ) it recognises the disc and goes to play it but the screen...

That is actually a poor conclusion. There are three different lasers, one for blu-ray, one DVD and one for CD games all in one holder inside. It certainly CAN be the laser. The description id the DVD/Blu-ray part is having focus problems. Contact Sony for a service center that can install a new drive (It needs to be calibrated on install)

My ps3 can play dvds but it wont start a blu ray. My tv keeps switching from 1080 p to 720p but then just leaves a blank black screen.

B ray is new your console must not be updated to play blue ray. Stick to DVD

sounds like the blue ray lens fried, u should be able to find one on ebay or craigs list not hard to put in

Make sure u have enable dvd and blueray play back. go to setting and enable it. cant come up with the step by step from the top of my head but im pretty sure its under settings. hope this works

When you put in a blue ray movie the screen goes blank

Search the official playstation website for the latest update and download it to your desktop
Move the file from your desktop to an usb stick or flash card or whatever.
Plug it in your ps3 and update (Info on how to do that should be on the official PS website.)

Wont gecognize games

Hi,
if the consoles still warranted, get it replaced or repaired.
Certain consoles use 2 different lasers. 1 for blueray and dvd. and 1 for games. Others have ways of switching power up and down. to enable different reading formats. i,m not sure of the PS3s backwards compatabilities. but you could try a PS2 game.
if it does,nt read that or any game. i,d suggest a laser read problem.
