Question about Mitsubishi WT-46807 46" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

The red portion of the image jumps away from the other two colors

I've heard several ideas on what to fix when one of the colors separates from the other two on a rear-projection television:

(a) the convergence ICs are bad (STK392-570), or (b) the caps are bad, or (c) some of the soldering around these previous two categories of items needs re-working.

What ever became of the other folks suffering from this problem with their WT-46807 televisions?

Where can I get a manual to help me remove the circuit tray? I took the back off, but I can't even find the convergence chips.

UPDATE: I haven't tried replacing the convergence ICs yet, but I noticed that a light Fonzie to the side of the cabinet fixes it instantly. The first whack fixed it for ten minutes. The second has fixed it for two hours of viewing spread across 3-4 viewing sessions over several days.

I suspect that the ICs themselves are fine, but they are in need of being resoldered to solidify the connections. This problem only began after I brought home a new surround sound system and watched movies with 'theater volumes' (which my wife would consider to be 'too darn loud'). Maybe I vibrated and cracked a solder joint which is now getting 'cold' from oxidation?

If no one considers it a waste of time, I might solder suck the convergence IC pins and lay down some fresh joints without taking anything off the chassis (if that's possible - haven't pulled it out yet to see if there's room to rework them without disassembling other junk around it).

Does this seem likely to cure it, since a Fonzie fix usually indicates a mechanical issue, rather than electrical?

Agreed. Resoldering is probably just a short-term fix. But, if I can get this old dog to last another six months, I'll be in a better position to get that new 300-inch MonsterPlex 3-D Eyeball Fryatron 6000 I've been drooling over. I'm hoping the price will come down to below $2000 from the $180,000 it's at now.

Otherwise, a Mitsubishi 73-inch rear projection would be a good compromise (and just happens to fit with only an inch or two to spare in my recessed TV nook at home). It's under $3K now.

I'll touch up the convergence IC's solder joints and report back.

1)The correct solution is (a)....
2)Concerning pulling the chassis on a 46" Mits...
due to compact size, your set has a higher degree of difficulty.
The 73", 65" and 55" are easier to do the same repair.
3)Begin by removing lower front cabinet, then remove front access
panel.Next provide yourself with plenty of light to see inside....
Remove chassis bolts (3) in rear',unplug as needed, noting location
and routing.Next, locate snap clips on front of circuit tray-Release.
Gently pull back on chassis until clear to remove center board.
Almost must pull all the way.Remove & rebuild center PCB.

Intermittant pin connects can certainly be soldered for a temporary fix. Then,in usually some weeks or months,a more advanced convergence failure will force the issue of replacing IC's.In th repair
business, time is money and warranty recalls are the worst time

Colors far out of convergence, and image is warped (bowed)

it sounds like bad solder connections on the convergence IC's if you do not resolder them right away the IC's will blow out then you wil;l have to replace them. Good luck

Red and green have separated. is this fixable?

yes this can be fixed
it is the convergence IC's that controls each color image alignment ,also other components(resistors , diodes , capacitors , ect..) in circuit with these convergence IC's(STK's) also need testing to see what other component has also failed or needs replacing.

Picture separated on 1/2 of screen

This sounds like a convergence problem. This is a common problem that is usually fixed 98% of the time by re-placing the STK392-020 ic or STK392-110, and check the fuse devices on the covergence PCB. I'm sure the actual parts numbers depend on the peticular brand. Good Luck!
