Re: can not add my fax machine ???
Your connection for the printer is ok, is your phone jax connected correctly. from the wall to back of printer (in)....and from (out) printer to (phone line in) pc....did you download the brother's printer/fax software completly...when done the test page would print and say fax is ok or not....if ok this will allow you to configure the time/date and rings to answer (your fax # is your home #) note if you have an answering machine and it picks up on the 5th ring (you will be better off setting the fax to pick earlier then the 5th)

Most fax machines would have a resolution selector to vary clarity of transmitted documents. The same would also hold true for scanning jobs. I would discount the possibility of the power supply since everything works except for the quality of the copy/fax. If the printer still works OK (quality of print out) then it is the scanner's availability to copy that is the issue. With current prices of all in one printers (fax/scanner), purchase of a new unit might be more practical not only in terms of cost but in downtime.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
On these machines there should be a button for set up or maintance on the fax machine.
If you can find this you may need to scroll and find the setup menu and enter in the fax setup area to add these changes. There are other sections to add date and time and store copies to memory or even print and set junk mail to off.
If the machine is old you may try the internet to search for a manual for this product or seek the vendor for publication manuals.
You can change the Transmit Resolution but not the resolution or the quality of the faxes received.
If your machine makes goog copies and prints, the problem is on the sender's side.
This is an excerpt from the troubleshooting section of your machine manual:
The image received on your fax machine was very poor. Contact the person sending you the fax and ask them to change their Transmit Resolution and Type of Original settings. Ask the person to make a copy of the document on their fax machine to ensure that it is working properly. Then ask them to send the fax again. If you still have a problem, try making a copy of a document on your machine to make sure it is working properly
Clicked on Start/Control Panel/PrinterI. Clicked Add a printer. Obtained (Copy 1) of my HP Photosmart C7280 all-in-one printer. Right clicked on (Copy 1)/properties. Opened Ports tab. Saw comment "Print to the following Ports. Documents will print to the first free checked port." A listed USB Virtual printer port, showed three printers -- my first printer, my copy 1 (& my fax printer) -- was unchecked. I placed a checkmark in this Port box. Both the original printer, and my copy 1 printer are printing just fine. *I have not checked to verify that my fax is functional. I did rename the original "color". I renamed Copy 1 as "grayscale", and --under printer preferences, checked, under "color options", to print in greyscale.
When you press the botton on the control that show print or scan, does it say that the copir is not equipited this funcation. If so, it will most likely cost a lot more then the whole copier is worth. The same goes with the fax funciation as well. You can most likely buy another copier with the print feature already installed. I'm sorry to say it, but you copier is out of date for printing to be afforadable
Have you tried to install it yet? If not, go Start>printers and faxes>add a printer. When the wizard box opens up and gets to the point about your driver, tell it to search in this location and then specify the location where you put the downloaded driver at. When it finishes your printer should be installed. If this fixes your problem please rate as fixed. If it didn't, please don't rate yet. Add a comment and tell me what happened and I'll be glad to help you further. Thanks.
DON'T KNOW IF THIS WILL HELP-BUT MY PROBLEM WAS SIMILAR--MINE WAS SAYING PAPER TOO NARROW WHEN I WAS TRYING TO PRINT AND COPY. I JUST KEPT MOVING THE FRONT SLIDER AND THE LEFT HAND SIDE SLIDERS BACK AND FORTH AND TOOK THE PAPER IN AND OUT --TRIED AGAIN AFTER EACH TIME--IT EVENTUALLY FIGURED OUT I DID HAVE THE RIGHT SIZE PAPER--
ALSO TRY---MENU--THEN--COPY SET-UP--THEN PAPER SIZE--SEE IF PAPER SIZE IS SET RIGHT.
