Question about Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 (U01E200) 200 GB Hard Drive

Maxtor 3200 - ASAP

Okay, I was moving my Maxtor 3200 back into my room when the darn case slipped through my fingers (That thing is freaking slick, eh?) And it hit the ground, was maybe 3 feet. It was not plugged in or anything, but when I tried to get it to run it wouldn't, the light would come on but all would happen is it would make a kind of buzzing noise, like it was trying to fire up but couldn't quite catch. I took the case off of it, and had unscrewed the metal covering to the drive, but the dang thing is stuck somehow. I have it plugged in, when I unplug it it makes the noise showing that it did show something was connected. I was wondering if there is anything I can do for it without paying couple hundred bucks.

I would like to add now, the buzzing noise is gone, and only a whirring sound, like it's running but I don't see the drive icon or anything for it under my computer.

It's ruined, and even more so now you opened it.

If there is important data on it then a data retreval service could try to recover the data for you by removing the platter (in a clean room) and placing it an special reader but at a price!

Sorry to see you didn't like my answer and you rated me badly. I have told you the truthful facts and given you an option for data recovery.

This is a bad drive with a scratch on the platter or something worse. You dropped it, dont punish me!

My janome 9000 won't sew forwards it just moves on spot

Make sure the stitch length is set higher than 2. Also make sure the feed dogs have not been inadvertently dropped for darning. If the feed dogs are up and moving back and forth, they are working okay but may have a lot of lint and dust inhibiting them from biting the fabric.

Are you sewing very fine or slick fabric? Frequently, that will cause the fabric to slip under the presser foot. Check your machine to see if you can adjust the pressure on the presser foot. If not, then try laying a piece of wax paper or vellum with the fabric. It can be easily removed after stitching.

Maxtor 3200 was working fine. Suddenly my

Try connecting it to another computer.
If it is not detected, then either the disk-drive "inside" the unit is dead, or the "adapter" (USB-to-Disk-Drive) inside the unit is dead.

If the latter, disassemble the case, remove the disk-drive, and attach it as an "internal" hard-drive to your computer.

Maxtor external hard drive not working how can remove files and store on my computer

If the drive is not working you have a few options. First, head to your local PC shop and have the techs take the hard drive out of the enclosure and test it. If the drive itself is still working have the techs put it in a new enclosure and make another copy of you files ASAP. If it's a failed drive then you will need the help of a pro, in this case reply back with your location(Country, State and City) and I will refer you to a pro in your region who can help get your files back.

Hope this helps FixYa,

I'm getting a code 10; cannot start device on my maxtor 3200 . The power light is on, but it no longer functions.

What is wrong with your drive is probably what was wrong with my drive. After two whole days of gut wrenching about should I or shouldnt I take the darn box apart , I took it apart figuring well it is a code 10 and Seagate ( bought maxtor) tells you that the drive has probably failed.
I took mine apart and found a printed circuit board that was attached to a standard IDE drive. I took the board off and plugged the now IDE drive into a spare IDE cable and power connection, turned on my computer and crossed my fingers. Lo and Behold the "CODE 10" DEAD HARDDRIVE WAS ALIVE!!! my guess is that the circuit boards overheat as their are very little air flow slots for this drive and something lets go between the hard drive and the connections. So dont throw it away , carefully pry open the plastic case and remove the hard drive and the printed circuit board ( you have to unscrew the metal cage around both and take out the 3 screws in the printed circuit board. then carefully separate the board from the hard drive . At least you should be able to recover your data on the hard drive. I ran a quality test on the hard drive after I copied all the files from it and there is not one sector wrong on the whole drive. This may not be the solution you are looking for but in the least you are not throwing away a possibly good hard drive. Patience is the rule in prying the case open ( I did it with two medium screwdrivers and started at the hole in the case near the connectors that is rectangular in shape. I too had the lights are on but nobody's home syndrome. Good luck

Maxtor 3200 personal 200gb drive external

If you did in fact change the partioning structure then the only recourse is to send the drive to a data recovery center. If the drive is running they should be able to recover the data.

Instruction manual

Hard drives dont need instructions. Connect it to your computer. Go to where you would format the drive ( like disk utility for the MAC ). Format it for the proper file system ( HFS,UFS,MS-DOS, NTFS...) That's it. Eject it always before you disconnect it, and treat it gentle like a baby. In the thousands of these that I've sold and repaired, they never came with instructions, just a cd with drivers for windows.

I could point you to this, because no matter who makes the drive, it's the same product, some are just made better, and some last longer. I would just stay away from plastic. rives spin anywhere from 4200-10,000 RPMs. That can generatesome heat even after 5 minutes.

Don't be fooled by slick looking hard drives. Your're gonna put some import stuff on that thing. If it fails due to poor quality like the infamous Lacie D2, that slick case means nothing when your drive is clicking its last death and being asked to pay 10 times the cost of that drive for starters to possibly recover it. I prefer seagate drives and wiebetech enclosures. Heavy duty, no non sense hardware, and I treat these things like they owe me.

FYI, seagate (the only American HD manufacturer and the best on the planet ) bought out Maxtor 2 yrs ago.

How Do You Open a Maxtor 3200 500 gb case?

remove the two visible phillips screws on the connector end of the case, (there are no hidden screws under the labels and the little squareish slot is nothing i can figure other than another vent -- then, press down on one side of the top vents and pull apart along the case halves, it disengages three crappy little small plastic latches, there are the same latches on both case sides -- start on either side, it was not easy. i was only able to open one side enough to forcibly pry open the case with my hands (nothing broke in so doing), so i'd say the design is hardly elegant, certainly not "ingenious."...

why open the case? because the green light flickers or does not glow, meaning the drive is not powered so it will not be recognized. Mine fried from connecting a similar looking AC adapter (a common IBM 12V 4A output AC power supply.) They have the same plug as the proper Maxtor 12V 2A AC supply. I'm pretty sure the higher amperage fried the enclosure circuit which resulted in a flashing or no green light - (when it works the light is steady.) Someone on this site said the 90% of the time when this happens it is just the enclosure power supply that failed, and that the fix is to remove the raw drive from the case and put into another enclosure (or connect to an internal IDE/ATA power and connector ribbon)

...but the bad news is when i put the raw drive in a good enclosure, it still only flickered, so i think 500 Gb drive is toast...well, at least i figured how to open the damn case...

Dropped my Maxtor

Maxtor is very difficult. If youve opened it, then youve voided the warranty. YOu may just need to extract the drive gently. THough dropping drive, on or not, seldom bears a positive outcome.

There should be some screws to remove from the below the foot. The spine peels away from around the enclosure then the 2 halves separate..which model exactly is it?
