SO I restarted the router, but how can I get a password on it so people arent using my internet.I'm not gonna lie, the instructions are very vague, and WPA WEP just donno what to choose, but I need help just so I do it right. thanx crystal

I agree instructions are not well explained.

Please download the manual from here

and go to page 17

When you are in the same setting page with your router, change the SSID with a name that you use to reconize your network like cwistabelle or my_nice_network

Channel you can live the one proposed by the router

Security select WPA-PSK

Encription select TKIP

Preshare Key mode select ASCII

Preshare Key enter a password from 8 to 60 letter and number, for example cwistabelle10 or something easy for you to remember.

IMPORTANT never put a password exactly the same like your SSID!

Try to connect with your wireless computer and remember to put the password that you just set up.

Let me know if OK.

To secure the router, first you have to access the router through web browser (Internet Explorer) by typing the IP address of your router in the address bar, which is usually (Default IP Address and it is also written at the back of router) and lookup for the options to do the following: -
1. Change the SSID (Name) of the router
2. Change the default administrative user name and password (unless you've configured otherwise, the default username is admin and the password admin.)
(The above step would prevent unauthorized access to your router)

Next step is to secure it:
1.On the left-hand side, under Setup, click "Wireless Settings" 2.Under "Security Options", select your desired encryption method WEP or WPA (preferably WPA2)
3.Choose a Network Key - it can be anything, as long as it's 8-63 characters in length
4. Click Apply

Now your router and your connection would become secure and the user has to provide the network key to access the internet.
Also, you may refer here for some additional details

Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

What is my wep key

A WEP key is a security code generated in your wireless router.
You need this code in order to connect to your security enabled, wireless network.
If you log into your router you should be able to find it in the wireless security settings.
It can be a word, phrase, or a bunch of random characters.

I wish to connect a laptop to my wireless network linksys _SES_34573 but do not remember my security key or passphrase. Any suggestions?

Connect the ethernet cable from your router to your computer. (basically don't use wireless)

Go to Start -> Run -> Type "cmd" (no quotes)

A black box should then appear, type "ipconfig" (again don't use quotes). You should then see something where it says Default IP.

Most likely or It does not matter if it's different. Go to Internet Explorer type the Default IP into Internet Explorer address bar

It will most likely prompt you for a username / password - If you do not know the username nor password - try looking it up your router in the list on this website and use the username/password they suggest.

If that doesn't work - Unplug your router's power cord, and press the reset switch found on the back of the router. Leave unplugged for a few minutes, then try logging into the Default IP address again.. with the username/password that is suggested at the site above.

Once logged in you can change or Lookup the WEP key. Source(s):

Internect connecting

If the laptop was connecting wirelessly before and you didn't change the wireless security key on the router during your troubleshooting steps with the ISP then it should just reconnect. If it doesn't reconnect you should probably delete the wireless profile that's saved and try connecting again. When you delete the wireless profile you will have to enter the security key again. Make sure you have this information handy.

If you are uncertain what the wireless security key is use your desktop that is physically connected to the router to log into the router and reset the security key.

To log onto the router you need to know the routers IP Address. You can obtain that information through the following:

Type CMD
Click OK
Hit Enter
Look for the default gateway. The default gateway is the IP Address of the router. By default the IP is

Type whatever IP Address you discovered into the address bar of your web browser (Internet Explorer for most) and hit enter.

You will be prompted for a login. If you didn't change the default login information to the router it should be a blank username and the word: admin - as the password.

Navigate to the wireless settings and reset the security key.

From your laptop key in the new network key.

Hope this helps.
